Basically, 100+ people crowded in to a boat built for 15 people and risked trying to cross who know how many miles of open Pacific in a bid to reach the United States. The boat sank and it looks like only 7 of the 120 survived.
So, why not allow more legal immigration into the States ?

Sounds like the news down here every other week. It's amazing what they'll jump in to get to Florida from Cuba. Even more amazing is the stuff that actually makes it.
