hazing does not exist for fun and games and to satisfy sadistic tendencies of a few... it has an important role in solidifying loyalties to an organization or social group - the more intense the abuse, the more intense a persons loyalty tends to be to that organization. its about improved chances of individual survival and survival of the group.
not my idea... just basic fundamentals of pychology.

I've met plenty of guys who searched Europe and the Pacific, Korea, and/or Vietnam looking for the Company Commander/Drill Instructor that pushed them through boot camp. It's about a 50/50 split whether they wanted to shake their hand or kick their ass.
There is plenty of hazing and abuse that goes on during basic training that's perfectly legal. The training methods of 40 and 50 years ago, with 4 or 6 or 8 million sad sacks in uniform, will not work today.
