Great Lakes, 1973. Asked the Navy for boot camp in Orlando or San Diego, they sent me to Great Lakes. Asked them for A School in Jacksonville, they sent me to San Diego. Asked for any ship in San Diego, they sent me to the Naval Air Station, Brunswick, Maine.
Spent Christmas Eve 1973 shoveling snow, and New Years Eve standing watch on the fenceline in an ice storm. Ditto on the never being touched, but one of the guys in our sister company was treated the way Ryan thinks recruits should be. He kept complaining about his feet, and his Company Commander treated him like a slacker for three weeks. Denied him sick call (you weren't supposed to, but it's in the gray area, I guess), the whole bit.
Blood poisoning set in, he lost one foot, and he's been drawing 60% disability since 1973.
