The Drill Sgt's and others in the chain got what they deserved.
They haven't "allowed" physical abuse of trainees in so many years. When I went through basic / ait in 1986 (Ft. Sill, Ok), I don't remember any pvt. getting touched, hit, etc. Worst you would ever get treated is a few bad names here and there.
