As a Catholic boy, I would call them props, only because it increases PR and brings in the $$$ when the donation plate* is passed around.
* It was a plate when I was a boy, but each row gets a nice leather pouch to fill at my local church these days. I called it God's wallet and received more than a few harsh looks <_<
