When Nintendo stayed with the cartridge format when everyone else went to the disc version for games in the previous generation of platforms it REALLY hurt their console sales in two ways. It made it survive on nintendo fanboys and kids and while both of those are a definite market niche that can be profitable game wise it's not enough of a broad base with which to do well system sales wise. And it limited developers options in creating games and made other platforms more desireable to develop for.
Nintendo's biggest asset is that it consistently produces great 1st party games like Legend of Zelda, The Mario games, and other titles. They have a core audience that will buy them right when they come out and buy the system solely on wanting Nintendo developed games.
