I really can't conceive what the next step in that architecture will "look like" ... but logic tells me everything in our lives that uses power would have some sort of smart functionality if it could. And all those devices would share information and help each other if they could too. So my diary should be able schedule what time my alarm clock should go off exactly.. after checking with my shaver how long my beard is and if I need a shave... and knows to monitor the travel route for traffic accidents that might affect the time I need to leave. etc etc so the basic building block being universal to any application would be a high prioity.
