IF the government was purely making it illegal to run spyware programs, I would vote for it. However if the government wanted you to install anti spyware programs on your computer in order to help them 'fight their war' than i wouldn't vote for it as who knows what they are really putting on your computer.
Besides, to tell you the truth. All a company has to do is go outside of the U.S. and run the same program. I see this as a pointless bill and would truly do no good. Bottom line, these programs are the next-gen viruses and you have to have the appropriate tools to fight them just like you did viruses a few years ago.
There will be a new breed of the 3rd gen coming soon, and more "anti" tools to fight those. It will be a never ending process. And eventuall companies will just bundle packages for anti-virus, anti-spyware, and anti-whateverthefuckisnext all in one for the same price as an anti virus program or for a monthly subscription rate and fight off all computer security issues (including firewalls etc).... For say $9.95 per month.
It is a program I would spend $10.00 a month on for complete protection of everything from firewall to anti-spyware as long as it was a top of the line product and updated daily.
Guess who is going to corner this amrket guys? Microsoft just got into the Anti Spyware market and made their own firewall - don't you think they are gearing up for something here? Bill Gates isn't stupid, he was lucky.. But he isn't stupid.
My guess is this will be the next big thing you see out of Microsoft and them pushing more and more towards the security of home PC's.
Symantec, watch out... If Microsoft gets in the game it's a whole new ballpark. Now if someone gets say a 6 month jump start on them they could compete.
B.T.W. if you go with my idea folks, I expect a royalty kick back
