Conservatives quite often demonstrate MORE concern on a personal basis (in action and in opening their wallets) for the socially disadvantaged than some liberals - the just don't advocate that the care be provided by the government. Not all conservatives agree with the reactionaries and haters like Bob Jones; for that matter, not all EVANGELICALS believe in the racism that lurks quietly on the right.

John McCain is a coinservative. Rudy Guilliani is a conservative. Even within the first Bush Administration (and just off the top of my head), Ridge, Whitman and Powell are conservatives. Those are just a few examples of individuals that don't fit the description you have given, and there are millions of people like them.
