Through out history the left in the US supported Lenin/Stalin, and other communist regimes. There were many leaders in the left who acively supported and excused socialist regimes - especially in the USSR.

There have been (and probably still are) leftists who supported the Soviet Union.
There have been (and probably still are) right-wingers who supported Nazism.
Not all conservatives support Nazism. Not all liberals support communism.
You have to remember that the Communists have probably killed off more liberals than Nazis and Facists combined, going back to the Russian Revolution. They, at least, are smart enough to understand that there is a significant difference between conventional Western liberalism and any form of Marxism.
I realize that may be hard for you to understand ... it does make the world much more complicated.
