I am not invited to National Security Council meetings either, but what I have seen so far suggests a strategy based on an ology - theology, ideology, perhaps both - that has a serious disconnect from reality. The mere fact that we took on the nation-building project in Iraq before the job was done in Afghanistan suggests that the planning department has little understanding of the battle we are fighting. The failure to adequately prepare for the occupation of Iraq is even more evidence that the man at the helm doesn't know how to read a chart.
An Afghani terrorized by a warlord or a druglord is easy prey for Taliban-like rhetoric. An Iraqi living in chaos without the prospect of gainful employment can easilly be persuaded that it is the fault of the Great Satan.
I am a believer in bleeding hearts when it comes to Islamic terrorists - I believe we should make their hearts (and asses and heads and any other body part we can sink a bullet into) bleed until they stop drawing breath. What I am concerned about, however, is the tendency of the right to grasp onto simple solutions to complex problems.
The problem of Islamic terrorists is not very different than the problem of communists 50 years ago. There is, of course, a dedicated cadre of true believers who would love to turn a Taliban-style government loose on the world. Then there are those who grasp onto Islamic fundamentalism as the only POLITICAL option open to them. Failure to distinguish between the two, and the failure to ween the one away from the other, is a sure way to LOSE this war.

Aeon - I am just not as cynical as you. I still have faith in human beings - of coure everyday it gets less and less.
Our enemies use our humanity against us. I keep thinking What Would the Romans Do?
