It's too bad that most Americans can only speak one language and most of them can't speak that well. In the Middle East and Europe, most people speak at least 3 languages and a lot of people on this side of the world speak as many as 6 or 7 languages without any problems.

I agree.
And "teaching" it doesn't seem to help. I took 2 years of French and 3 years of Spanish and can't speak, read or understand much of either.
But I could conjugate verbs, which seemed to the crux of the lessons.
