"Marriage Penalty Relief. The new tax law brings good news for married couples. Previously, most married couples paid more taxes on their combined income than unmarried couples filing separately. Now the 15-percent bracket for married joint filers is twice that of single filers, effectively eliminating the so-called marriage penalty. In addition, the standard deduction for married couples filing jointly increased from $7,900 to $9,500--twice the amount allowed for single filers."
