Saddam was getting aid from the U.S. before Reagan because he had crushed the Communist Party very quickly and made all the right noise about being anti-Communist, although it's true that we really started aiding his military when they took on Iran.
As a matter of fact, it is said that the current Secretary of Defense expressed the concern of the Reagan Administration over allegations that he was using gas against the Iranians. There is no definitive word on whether he had his fingers visibly crossed at the time.
I wonder how many of the coalition of the willing* (to accept U.S. aid in exchange for nominal support of a war that doesn't mean fuck to them anyway) can be accurately described by much of the rhetoric being used to describe Saddam? {Bonus points will be awarded to anyone who has every heard of Palau before this.} Are we going to liberate Azerbaijan or Uzbekistan any time soon?
