No on is puttin porn first to the detriment of the u.s. but it is pretty easy to remove Religion from the equation and make sure our industry doesnt feel the wrath.

Oh, there are a lot of reasons that Ashcroft is Attorney General; he isn't there "just" because of porn. He served 8 years as the AG of Missouri before becoming a Senator, so he the background for the job. He is a very "law and order" kind of guy.
That being said ... giving Ashcroft the job as AG was part of the plunder delivered to the Robertson/Falwell crowd for their help in the election. (I realize that some people around here don't know that kind of trading happens for jobs like AG, Vice President, etc., but it's true). First of all, his almost Quixote-ish defense all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court of some blatantly flawed abortion laws endeared him to that crowd. Ashcroft had been floating some trial ballons about a run himself, and he was able to generate quite a lot of support from that wing of the party.
