If you read it more closely you'll see that the switching LCD is what is revolutionary. It does not turn on and off 60 times a second or anything - it simply switches between 2D and 3D. in 2D mode the black LCD is switched out - in 3D it is switched in. There is a button on the laptop that allows you to switch instantly between 3D and 2D - that's all the switching means.
In front of the laptop there are about 9 sweet spots - yes you need to manouver your head a little and choose the sweet spot you prefer - but also people around you can view the 3D too by moving into a lateral sweet spot.
However, you are correct, this technology is young and to keep it affordable the first devices will be notebooks, cellphones and PDAs. A more expensive version of the technology is being developed for group viewing (such as in the home) - this will be about 5 years before it is affordable - then we'll see the technology transition to the living room.
The markleting plans of the LCD manufacturers is to have 3D TV in the stores by 2010 - but personal devices will have it from now onwards.
JR - yes, your comment gives pause for thought - but over $1 billion has been invested in this new 3D technology so far - I think they must be *fairly* certain of making money having spent that : )
