This is a common thread on the board thus far from you highschool grads, that those of us in college are just mindless spitters of facts, nothing else required of us.
Lemme tell you all how it works. During the course of a 3 and half month semester, I am given a ton of theory with various facts and figures to deal with in whatever the topic of the class is. Each professor is different in their testing style, but you will find when you reach upper division (I hate to say that as you think I will just be placing myself on a pedestal, but it really is called "upper division") level courses, the professors tend to expect a little more from you. Therefore they tend to test you on your ability to bring everything you learned together. This is not how you made it through highschool, memorization is not enough. Testing is not simple "Describe such and such theory", it is more like "use theory a in light of findings of theory b to describe whatever damn scenario". Every test I take these days revolves around my ability to bring everything I have learned together. If I successfully defend myself, I pass. If I do not, I do not pass.

There is nothing wrong with most officers that a good enlisted person can't protect the good ones from - and what I said about officers in that quote can be applied equally to any like group of people in any profession, military, civilian, or acadmic.
