Unless you are talking about two-seat sportscars, you can certainly get along just fine with a compact - although they are not nearly as cool or as convenient.

PD I think the biggest difference between when we were kids and now is the laws on carseats.
Here in VA you have to keep a kid in a full carseat until they're 6. Those carseats take up a hell of a lot of room and don't fit well into the back of compact cars (most have kinda 'curved' back seats).
Plus with true baby seats now they've gotten bigger, they're made to go from the car to the stroller to the top of a shopping cart - it's just a major pain to try to go anywhere when you have a small car. Add in the stroller, diaper bag, etc and there's no room left to bring anything home.
