Most burglars if jumped on in the dark by a 100 lb dog trying to rip his face or nuts off won't be able to keep calm and shoot the dog. They'll either try to run like hell or cover up, protect their vitals, and scream.
I've seen the police dogs in action a few times and while there will always be someone who can keep calm and handle the dog, most people cannot especially when they're trying to sneak around in the dark.
At least from what I've seen.
But having a gun for yourself never hurt either.
And if you have a yippy poodle it's better than nothing since it'll wake ya up and let you get your gun before it's too late.
