What kind of a "hash"? Like an MD5 checksum?

No. An MD5 algorithm takes an input of arbitrary length and outputs it as a 128-bit fingerprint of the input. This is more for verifiying data integrity.
The Altnet method utilizes a hash, or unique identifier, so that networking applications can correctly identify files (name, origin, address, location, etc).
