I don't recommend manuel treadmills ! You can't jog or run on them ! You have no choice but to hold on to the handles and push the tread below you ! if you let go to start jogging the belt will stop ! I stopped selling them a few years ago cause of the complaints from clients who hurt there backs using them !

Two things to look for in a treadmill ,
1- you need minimum a 2 hp continous motor ! Don't look at peak duty , it means nothing !
2- You want to make sure the frame is heavey enough for your wieght ! When trying it out bring it up to at least a decent jogging speed and make sure it doesn't shake below you !

A few sugestted brands
Trimline (the new models are getting awsome at very reasable prices!)
Pacemaster (probably the best bang for the buck)
Life Fitness (such a sweet machine)
Precor (my personal favorite , but definitly the best on the market!)

If your worried about your knees , try an elliptical traner !
I've had back problems in the past, and I have a bad ankle still.

Is there something that would be better for me than a bike? I was walking 3 or 4 miles 4 or 5 times a week, but winter is here, and honestly, my ankle was getting bad, so I was going to have to find something else anyways.

I don't know dick about gym equipment. But I figured the bike would be easiest on my ankle. Is that right?
