Just having a person at the gate is enough to keep most nonsense to a minimum. It's not perfect but it would be a heck of a lot better than what you have now. If someone is serious about breaking into your house a great security guard isn't going to stop them. They wouldn't bother with the gate.. they would scale the wall and go straight for the jewels not the big screen tv. They wouldn't need to drive through the gates. The guard at the gate is just to keep Joe Stupid out of the neighborhood.
You mentioned having to let an Officer into the neighborhood because the gate was unmanned... thats rather scary.
