What I have picked up so far was that there was a transformer on fire at a manhattan con-ed plant... and someone had heard an explosion... So sounds like a transformer went out on them....
Well when the plant had problems, they off course switched over their section of the powergrid and at that point it caused an "Instability" in the powergrid...
Then all the lights went out....
I wasn't there for the 78 outage but I remember the "famous" blackout of 65.... That was fun...lol
