i walked out of a store in Bellevue Washington just in time to see a 17 year old kid slam into the back this womans new Jaguar. her car was mangled and i was pretty sure she was hurt.
i called 911 on my mobile phone as i ran up to her to make sure that she did not move and see if she bleeding or had and critical injuries. she was semi-conscious and dazed but seemed to be ok. the kid that hit her, had already gotten out of his car and was ok.
she started to come around and was wearing her seatbelt and did not seem to be hurt. she slowly got out of her car and staggered to the sidewalk and slowly lifted her head to survey the damage. she looked silently at the scene and started to cry as it began to sink in what had just happened.
once we established that everyone was ok and the ambulance was coming, the kid sheepishly admitted that he not only did not have insurance, but he did not even have a drivers license.
the woman really started to cry. she said that she had just gotten her car back from the shop because she got hit in a parking lot two weeks earlier from a kid with no insurance.
she continued to sob and looking for some comforting words and reassurance that everything would be ok, when she again lifted her head, looked at me and said "i cant believe this is happening to me", "i cant believe how bad my luck is".
I looked at her, smiled a kind, sympathetic and understanding smile and said "you know what they say"?
she brightened up a little bit and asked "what" in a hopeful tone, waiting for me to say that one thing to make everything ok again.
"bad things always come in 3's", I said.
"you really gotta wonder whats next"
her smile turned into a blank expressionless stare as she pondered what horrible event was next... her knees buckled and she hit the ground.
i always felt really bad about that moment.
