Since they are based in Europe, then they are also paying VAT/sales tax on all signups from EU countries (19%)... That could explain the lower payout.
Trials are ok for some sites, others do not need them... I guess their "seventeen" site can convert without a trial (have never send traffic to them - I´m only guessing).
