PD, I understand they could not just come out and report specifics, but the guy could have spoken with his correspondants and producers. The weeks building up the war on CNN you would have thought it was George Bush who was murdering people, and the Iraqi regime were a bunch of boy scouts.

Mike, I guess my whole point it that it is much ado about nothing. Most of the people "piling on" to this story are doing so only for the chance to take a poke at CNN for it's failure to spin the news the way they want it to be spun.
What CNN did is absolutley no different than what every news organization, including the New York Times and the Washington Post, has done in places like Moscow until the early 90s, in Berlin from 1932-42, Peking to this day, and who the hell knows how many other places - trade NOT telling certain stories in order to keep some access.
Right? Wrong? I don't know ... I wondered about when reading Shirer's books on WWII, when reading I don' t know how many books by former journalists who'd reported from the Soviet Union; and I wonder about it today.
I think you'd be quite suprised at some of the folks who are probably glad CNN stayed as long as they did. I suspect that the whole story got told to somebody, even if the stories didn't appear over the air. I don't know that to be true
in this particular case; the only reason I'm even speculating on it is that it has happened and does happen in an awful lot more places than people think.
