Chirac and the French seem to be good political animals.. they managed to explode lots of nuclear bomb test in the South Pacific not so long ago and have never seemd to have had to really pay and price for that. I hope you are right Mike and they do lose out for their self interested disloyalty this time.

I did live there up until the end of 2000 - right down in the south and it was fantastic - but the southern Frenchies are a lot more chilled it seems than their northern compatriots who effectively run the Govt etc.
Re the French being political animals... don't forget that for hundreds of years the language of diplomacy was French, possibly because of their (perceived) historical power and possibly because of the fact that they might have been bloody good at the politicking that goes on between nations.
