My point was going to be that the French aided the US gain independence from the British colony's by attacking them at sea and in their colony's thus preventing them reinforcing their troupes in the States...
Ok so it wasn't for entirely altruistic reasons, but what war/international assistance is? (they just wanted to screw over their main strategic rivals - the Brits - and also make them lose most of their colony's).
You could even argue that it helped shape the Free country you have today.
