Content licensing advice?

Is there a base line asking price for contet licensing for a DVD? I am considering licensing some of Jill's content to a company for a DVD production overseas. Is there a per minute baseline perhaps? x amount of dollars per hour of video? Exploring some options in new terrritory here. Thought some of you guys may have some words of wisdom.

Thanks on advance.

From what I have seen its done on a flat rate per country and it isnt that much. How many different countries do they want to distribute to ? I would also be careful since it will be next to impossible to police to content once they have it.

That's how I wanted to sell it. Just for their country and a flat rate. It's old content for us and a narrow niche. Any more money on it is gravy to us. I'm not trying to make a fortune, just didn't want to short change ourselves either. I didn't want to manufacture DVDs, so I was trying to cut a flat rate deal for video, they manufacture.

Is the offer for a single scene or a collection on a dvd of, say, 4 or 5 scenes?

Different territories/countries pay different amounts and all have various restrictions where else you can market to. Are they wanting the content for just DVD or asking for other digital or broadcast rights as well? Are they looking for a specific output on a regular basis or just one and done type deal?

Licensing is a good source of gravy but you do have to be cautious as PornLaw mentioned.

If you feel more comfortable with answering specifically to my questions off the board then feel free to hit me up at timlake at homegrownvideo dot com.

It was for a single DVD, just for DVD in one country. They have several retail stores and could/would push them through there. They also have a website, which I was okay on them selling the DVD's through. I imagine if it sold well for them they would want to do more. I have about 15 already done and can produce more pretty quick. I was hoping to do one a month.

They also have asked what my price would be per unit if I made the DVD's, but I just didn't want to get into that end of things.

Their last email offered me 1k for a 60 minute DVD. I don't think I'm going to do it.

At the moment...anyone can get it for free...as we all know. If someone wants to give me a grand for old content to sell on dvd....its out the door. But I wanna see the cash in my account first. Not sure why this is a discussion. The hammer has dropped.

Well for what you are describing, that is actually a great price. Most single country, single title deals for amateur/pro-am/gonzo go for about half that or less unless you have a well established brand. You might want to look into the dvd replication if they say they can move enough pieces to beat the $1000. You can get runs done for orders of around 2000 to 2500 pieces done very affordably.

Start trying to find other countries that will make similar offers and you will be off to a great start. Good luck!
