Washinton Porn Tax Dies in Committee
The 18.5% tax that Washington State Rep. Mark Miloscia wanted to levy against porn videos and other adult products has died in committee. Rep. Ross Hunter refused to give the bill a hearing on the grounds that it would over-complicate Washington's tax structure to apply different tax rates to different merchandise based on their content. Hunter says that Washinton's participation in the Streamlined Sales Tax Project gives him an obligation to keep Washington's sales taxes as simple as possible, and that Miloscia's plan would have introduced too many gray areas.

Score one for the politicians that actually have a clue.
Needless complications of the tax system probably cost billions every year to administer and maintain, a total waste of money, and creates confusion that almost assures that most companies and many individuals will make mistakes on their taxes or fail to follow all directives. |
