Barack Obama "Curious George" T-Shirt Sparks Protest in Georgia

Atlanta, GA 5/14/2008 06:17 PM GMT (FINDITT)

A Barack Obama T-shirt with a picture of cartoon character Curious George has sparked a protest in Georgia on Wednesday. The T-shirt equates Obama to the likeness of the cartoon monkey.

The shirt being sold at Mulligan's Food and Spirits, a bar in Marietta, shows Curious George, the cartoon monkey, peeling a banana with the words "Obama in '08" printed beneath.

About a dozen people gathered outside the bar Tuesday to protest the shirt. The Southeast regional director of the Anti-Defamation League says the shirt is "an outrageous slur" against Obama and all African-Americans.

Mike Norman, who owns Mulligan's Food and Spirits says the T-shirt is not meant to be racist. He told the Associated Press that he thinks it's funny because he says Obama and Curious George "look so much alike."

Even when those black people don't live in America. You know what blacks that live in America expect us to call a black man that lives in Canada? An African American. You know what blacks that live in America expect us to call a black man from Nigeria that is visiting the U.S.? An African American.

I have a friend who was born and bread in Joburg. He moved to NYC where he lived for years. He is a six foot tall blue eyed blond African. He is a genuine African American not like these wannabe black folks who have never set foot on the dark continent.

Hammer 05-17-2008 08:24 PM

Re: is there a resemblance?

I dont think they need to have set foot in Africa to be called African Americans because in that case the term is being applied to anyone that can trace their heritage back to Africa. My problem is with tacking American on the end even though they may not live in America. To me a black man is a black man but the politically correct in this country call a black man that lives in England and has never set foot in America, an African American. D'oh!

I agree and as a Canadian I find it very offensive, arrogant and useless. I don't go around identifying myself as a Scottish Canadian. In fact I don't feel a need to id myself at all. Just look at me. I am blond. I have blue eyes. Nuff said. Unless you are blind as a bat, then it should be obvious what my roots are.
The other interesting thing is that when a black man or woman has a baby with a white man or woman, the kid becomes an African American. Go figure. They lose their European heritage in a blink of a pc eye.
I gotta say "North Americans" are the most sensitive prissy people on the planet when it comes to race and nationality. No one else in the world cares.
Yeah, I know, I am a racist. Not.

Comparing a black man to a monkey like that is racist. Is slavery and 100s of years of rape and death funny too? If your people had been shit on for 100s of years dont you think you would be struggling to find an identity too?

My people did struggle for hundreds and hundreds of years and we were enslaved, and we do have an identity. A very strong one. A very successful one. A country of some of the greatest inventions of all time. So I don't quite think that argument flies. Its not the monkey thing that I was discussing, its the arrogance of denoting a race as African American. I could care less about the monkey thing. Its just another redneck pushing a button that should be ignored instead of acknowledged.

WHAT A CROP OF BULLSHIT
I guess there "shit on society" is to blame why black people fill our prisons and jails at a higher ratio than other American races, ...that's whitties fault?
Mind if I ask? Why aren't there Jews selling crack and pussy on our American streets? I mean...really now, They where shot, killed, tortured, and all the so-called bad things just like the blackie got. :heil:
Point of the matter is, other races have been almost terminated from existence. But ya don't see them standing on line at the food stamp line with a pity story bout how whitty oppresses they're livelihood.
