in response to the diner question, if your going out to eat at 12am .
The marietta diner is cheap, plentyful and the service is good. Not many things got the three at 12am.

atlanta has the be the diner capital of the USA man, there are like 40 diners in the area

my issue is that as much as I love marietta diner and hanging with you all, it is a 4 hour proposition, avg 1 hour to get there, 2 hours to eat, 1 hour to get back...which is why I am not there every time, the drive just sucks

if we could find some place in between the 75 and 85, possibly around perimeter mall, I would jump for joy :) but I don't know that area as well as others, so maybe someone else could jump in and shout.....perimeter mall seems like a nice middle point for those of us that live over this way and you all that live that way

there is a great 24 hour diner over here in stone mountain, but I can't see you all being down for that, LOL......

If its to be at dinner time it should be easy to pick a place. As long as its not at the Mall. There are several places on Roswell Rd as well.

LOL! Ya think? Double those times for me. In 3 years Kathi is the only one I've convinced to actually come to MY neck of the woods instead of me forking out $20-30 each trip for gas plus the time.

But my overeating has finally caught up with me - just a matter of time - and my cholesterol is high, so diner eating, fatty foods, etc. are going to be taboo for a bit and Lipitor will be for breakfast.

Might I mention the Waffle House, Waffle King, and McD's drive in (with limited menu) are all open up here 24/7 ;) The Walmart too. We could buy some stuff at the Walmart, then knock on the doors of the people who park their RVs there and meet new people.

And I have a freezer full of steaks, pork chops, hamburgers and hotdogs. And the nifty freeze pops Dick N Bush likes :)

Once again name them, dont make open statements then its someone else problem to figrue out where. The landmark your going to pay ten dollars for eggs, waffle houses have booths which doesnt work for groups and the atlanta diner sucks big time.
Well considering Gonzo, my wife and I, Bobby July ,the kid with bandana all live in marietta and kathi works in marietta. For 12am your in the minority and if it takes a quarter of a tank its time to get rid of the tired ride and get a new car lol .

that is fine tony, i don't want to argue

i was just suggesting spicing things up a little by choosing new places to try out, not only because it is 40 minutes drive for me, but also because it is just fun to experiment and not do the same thing time after time

i don't know restaurants in Atlanta all that well, so I asked others to make suggestions, sorry if it offended you so much that I didn't know any atlanta eateries off the top of my head

as for getting a new car, how about you buy it and I will gladly take it

There ya go....

You just discovered one of the secrets to FFN dining. Decision by committee doesn't work. Just pick a spot and a time and publicize it. Anyone who wants to come will and will have a good time. Those who want to bitch, let 'em bitch...or better yet, they can step up and name a time and place that they like.

I'm usually pretty flexible, and my drive is at least as long as Jace's for marietta.

I plan to be there.

Hell Puppy 12-01-2006 01:47 AM

Re: dem cakes this sat?

A couple of things come to mind while reading the thread...

First off, we dont ALWAYS have to do midnight. A normal dinnertime someplace mid-ways is a nice change of pace....also means we might be able to get some folks who dont normally come out on the vampire shift. Maybe once a quarter.

That opens up the list GonZo posted. I would also be game for a dinner someplace nice periodically, we haven't had a Fogo or similar throw down in a while.

And I dont think I can name 10, but I can name most of the food that's open at midnight around the burbs:

Marietta Diner
Landmark Diner Jr. (Roswell at 285)
Multiple IHOPs (some not group friendly)
Georgia Diner (near gwinnett place, one of my faves)
3 million Waffle Houses (none are group friendly)
A half dozen or so Steak n' Shakes
Denny's (only one I know of is JCB at 85)
Multiple Taco Macs
Garrisons (full menu til at least midnight)
Intercontinental Hotel (high end 24 hour dining, with blow job friendly booths)

Hey, I did hit 10!

I wouldn't mind alternating with Georgia Diner every other time or even every third or fourth time. Very similar menu, very group friendly...I know that would make myself and Jace happy as it's on our side of town.

There's also a new diner in Roswell that is "open late", but sign doesn't say "how late" that GonZo and I need to scout. Food must be good as it's been packed the couple of times we've noticed it. That's pretty centralized as well (near Holcomb Bridge and 400).

Jace 12-01-2006 04:14 AM

Re: dem cakes this sat?

if anyone is up for it, taco mac's are great places to meet up earlier

the one by my house is never very crowded either

maybe one night we can all meet up there, they have great food and drinks

we can plan that later down the road though

I will be there at Dem Cakes Saturday at 9pm. This has been an interesting thread for sure.
Maybe on Saturday we can discuss other options. If YOU have someplace different you want to try throw into the mix it is an easy thing to do. Just get the details of that particular location and bring it to the table. You may get shot down, but at least you tried!

I live alone and relish the times I can have a meal with anyone else other than Tivo. I do not mind driving anywhere and I am up for suggestions and recommendations for dining options.

I like new places and food... and long walks in the rain, puppies and bad boys.

Happy Friday

Good reference, but no ode to the JYD here.

We haven't splained it lately, so I will again explain why we call it "dem cakes".

It's actually the Marietta Diner, it's a place out in the northwestern burbs that is open 24/7. They have a huge menu and serve everything on it all day. They even have booze. But one of the most striking features is as soon as you walk in the door their dessert cases are on display. Notice i said "cases", plural. At any given time there may be 50 or more desserts to choose from including tons of cakes and pies.

Now being 24/7, one reason we love to eat there is the entertainment factor. Great place to people watch on a friday/saturday night about the time the bars start closing.

On one of our very first visits after discovering the place, as we're waddling out after a huge breakfast, this classic southern redneck teen hottie comes in with assistance of her boyfriend who is helping keep her vertical. She's drunk off her ass and looks like the type of girl who is used to being fed out of a fast food bag before bumping uglies in the backseat and may have never been to a place where you sit down to order before.

Anyhow, we meet up with this as we're walking out and she's walking in the door and the first thing out of her mouth as she hits the door in a classic southern redneck twang is "looooook at dem cakes!" Now I cant really do it justice in writing, but suffice to say that the way she said it, "cakes" had at least 3 syllables.

Ever since then, we simply refer to the joint as "dem cakes".

If you raise your eyes from looking at the cake counter, that entire backwall is booze....there's even a bar to sit at to the left of the cake.

I know, all those cakes are blinding...you see nothing else.
