Who started the first TGP?
I think it was The Hun, but when he started out you couldn't submit to him, he would link directly to the galleries bypassing the banner pages and Top50 links.
Webmasters hated being indexed by The Hun because bandwidth was very expensive in 1997, 90% of the surfers had to be sent to a top50 or a sponsor to be able to afford the bandwidth of the remaining 10% finding your gallery. He was one of the most hated webmasters at the time. What was the first TGP that people submitted their galleries to voluntarily? |

Re: Who started the first TGP?
I remember when The Hun wasn't a TGP, he just listed backdoors in paysites. $600+ in bandwidth at my local ISP taught me about backdoors.
This was back in 1996 and yeah, bandwidth was horribly expensive compared to now. I had a co-lo (the only type available at the time) and paid $12.50 a gig of bandwidth until 2002 ... plus the monthly fee to maintain the server. It was only when they wanted $1,200 for a new server that I balked and looked around and found out bandwidth was a whole lot cheaper and there were alternatives like dedicated servers. Before that, control panels were unheard of and to add an email address I had to ask them to do it. |

I remember getting listed on the hun inadvertantly when I was starting out...he linked to an open directory I had forgotten about. I quickly stuck an index.html page in the directory and enjoyed the traffic for a bit... |
