This is why you should know how to fix your own computer

TOPEKA, Kansas (AP) -- The Kansas Supreme Court on Friday ousted a county judge for viewing Internet pornography on his office computer.

Saline County District Judge George R. Robertson, 56, had been on the bench for 10 years. He has been on administrative leave since June, when a judicial panel recommended his removal for violating the canons of judicial conduct.

Justices noted that "public trust is essential to an effective judiciary" and that one judge's conduct may affect the public's perception of the entire judicial system.

Robertson told the commission he spent countless hours as an elder of his church and had spread himself too thin between his judicial work and his church obligations. He has since left his position at the church.

He told the panel that adult Web sites provided a diversion over nine months. A county computer technician discovered the viewing and reported it.

Robertson's attorney told the court last month it should be cautious in removing judges "because doing so disrupts the public's choice of who should serve in the judiciary."

Justices agreed to a point. "The public has also expressed a choice to have a system of discipline which can result in a judge's removal from office," the court found.

The decision was unanimous, though one justice did not participate because he knew Robertson.

His computer tech ratted him out. He needs to be thrown out of the geek fraternity.

This article bothers me. I haven't read the "canons of judicial conduct," so I'm on weak footing here and I know it, but his removal for having "viewed" adult websites seems to me to be a severe abuse of power by the people that removed him. Even judges are entitled to private lives, and frankly, the absolute *last* thing I'd ever want to do is stand before a stressed out judge with no personal life.

If the article is accurate, the computer tech read his history. It said "viewing." Now, that might mean downloaded material, but the article reads more like the tech saw the history.

An elected official was removed not because there was a flaw found in the way he performed his job; not because the voters became dissatisfied with his performance and did the legal things required for a recall...he lost his job for indulging in perfectly legal behavior.

Now, if somewhere in the "canons" it says "thou shalt not view online porn while in chambers," fine. He broke a rule and judges are all about rules. But if what is being held up as being violated is one of those impossibly vague "role model" type statements...this is just flat out wrong.

I hope the judge has a pet civil lawyer who's turned loose on the computer tech for violation of privacy.

Damn, the stuff I'm reading on this board today makes me wants to go back to being an unpublished novelist. I didn't make any money but I wasn't this stressed. I didn't have to worry about having the FBI kick my door in searching for dangling participles.

Not quite. He was viewing pornography on a county computer. If it's "The Man's" machine, "The Man" can set the terms of its use.

All right then. Since a law was violated here, we have a whole new ball game. Sitting judges can't decide which laws are ones to which they will abide and which laws they won't.

My husband can't even get onto the internet from his office computer. However, his office mate is in charge of the campus website, so he only has to cross the room. ;)

I know of a company that had one manager who inisisted they install the kind of tracking software that could be used to determine who was using their internet access for what.

He inisisted that a guy who was caught spending 4% of his logged-in hours on porn sites be fired.

He was later fired when it was discovered he was spending 15% of his logged-in time on eBay.

Why thank you ... but not necessary. I still get a chuckle out of the demise of the cocksucker in question.

I was NOT the individual fired for surfing porn sites, btw. The only time I've ever surfed porn on a company computer I was getting paid to do it, indirectly by the Catholic Church no less.

Classic :okthumb:

I agree... I'm very open minded about this but it wasn't a violation of his rights if he did it it on a computer at the office - It's lame he was fired, but most likely entirely legal. If not, you know a judge of all people would probably fight it :)

We have implimented a policy of no more than 10% of the day surfing "non porn related" websites.

Biggest question I have is why don't they install filtering systems ?

But do agree, county computer, county rules, porn, espn, cnn, ebay, amazon, does not matter, not their for "personal use".....unless it is, is it a perk for being a judge ?

I dunno, it's Sunday Morning and thinking about it makes my head hurt.
