Where else but in a Catholic school....

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australian educational authorities are investigating claims that noisy school children had had their mouths taped shut to keep them quiet, officials said Tuesday.

Police said the children, from a Catholic primary school at Wollongong, about 50 miles south of Sydney, had been at rehearsals for a school concert when a volunteer working in the school hall asked them to be quiet.

When the noise continued, the unidentified volunteer then cut up 20 pieces of masking tape and told the children to put them on their mouths.

Police investigated the incident after the parents of one of the children complained but said it was unlikely they would take any further action.

The New South Wales (NSW) state Catholic Education Office is conducting its own investigation, NSW Education Minister Carmel Tebbutt said.

"If the incident occurred as it is reported, it is very, very concerning," Tebbutt told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio.

wow... and yet the police probably won't do anything....

I love catholic schools... what with the kilts and all... but seriously....
I suppose the catholic school in my hometown was more open about things seeing as it was the only one in the district to have a day care for the children of its students.

ahhh bishop redding high school.... where half the girls are pregnant, and the other half don't wear underwear...

My parents never sent me to Catholic school, but they used it as the "big threat."

"You keep this up and next year....St. Mary's!!!"

I didn't find out until later in life that after Cathedral Grammar School and Cathedral High School, my mother would have slit her own throat rather than send me to Catholic school. :)

A bit of tape isn't going to hurt the little buggers...

It was at my Catholic Primary school where I received the cane for the last time :(

I also hated Monday's because the teacher would ask us all "so what was your priest wearing at mass yesterday and why?”

As if I’d know the answer

Then that would have been the last time I got the cane and not the time I stuck my hand in Sarah Martin's knickers ;)

I was in Catholic school from grade 1 thorugh 12...

My last 5 years, I attended an all boys Catholic school. I remember one time
Brother Dennis grabbed me from the front of my shirt and lifted me off the floor. I told him to put me down. When he did he pushed me back and I
hit the wall. I got up and charged him and kicked his ass. I was called to the office by the superintendent. Brother William asked me why
I did that. I told him I did not appriciate what Brother Dennis did and I was
just defending myself.

I was supended from school for three days. Back then in catholic school they owned you.

In elementary school here in Montreal, we still had Nuns as teachers. I still cringe at the site of a Nun walking down the street. They were all cruel and sadistic at my school! Those damn yard sticks on your fingers or the back of your head....OOOWWWW!

They never used yard sticks in my school...They used 12" wooden rulers on the
back of our hands. Fuck that hurt!:(

Actually this whole thing has been a bit of a beat-up.

Turns out the kids were being too loud and one of the parent volunteers said to them, in jest, that they should stick some tape on their mouths.

Kids being kids...they did.

All been resolved, no harm, no foul.

Ah. The typical "news makes hysteria out of an incident that wasn't."

Thank you, Lisa. :)
