The estimates on the prevalence of so-called "click fraud" vary widely. Critics of the system say 10 to 20 percent of the clicks are bogus _ done by a person or automated program with no intention of buying something. Others say incidents of fraud are vastly overblown.

Gross is among those who believe click fraud is a big problem. He aims to change things with a "cost per action" system that only charges ad commission when a purchase is actually completed.

"I believe the commercial side of search will evolve toward cost-per-action in the next five to 10 years," Gross said.

Will google adopt the "cost per action" to combat click fraud?

No. Read your adwords account for their next move.

Click fraud can be all but eliminated with the right technology.

Why would a big SE care? They can make some precautions to show they care but ultimately their advertisers will factor that in to their budget and adjust accordingly.

Since they are the big show in town they'll always have an audience anyway. Click fraud blows but it's a part of the game.

Yeah - they could do alot more with technology, but like you said why should they - unless their advertisers demand it...

There is a thin red line between making maximum profit and pissing off advertisers, and in time SEs could have pushed many advertisers in the direction of CPA instead of CPC. That would mean lost advertising market share compared with today - maybe the CJ.comīs will be much bigger on the expense of SEs?
