That's the accelerator they let us undergrads smash atoms with.

MissEve 01-29-2005 05:15 AM

That is a cool pic. You will need to post the one with the glasses and grandpa sweater to confirm the geekdom.

Was actually recreating Rutherford's experiment that day. At some point, the alarm that detected too many radioactive particles went off and I had to run outta there. I was never that great in the lab. Always preferred pen and paper.

grimm 01-29-2005 06:54 AM

gold foil standard for "viewing" particles released after the collision of alpha particles. Did the same stuff in college.

super colliders are cool. I liked the EM telescope better.

In some sort of crude sense, which no vulgarity, no humor, no overstatement can quite extinguish, the physicists have known sin; and this is a knowledge which they cannot lose.

Bobby Oppenheimer was a smart man;) that group got to be the hand of god, and sword of damacles all in one. If you read their journals, writings, etc. after the Atom was split.. there is a sad, somber, almost melanholy guilt, a philosophy on man weighted down by anguish and the magnitude of what happened. Einstein was never the same, Neither was Oppenheimer, nor Feyman
