NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Blockbuster Inc. announced Tuesday it is abolishing late fees on all its video tapes, DVDs and video games as of Jan. 1.

The world's largest video rental company will still have due dates for their rental products -- one week for games and two days or one week for movies, depending on whether it's a new release.

But customers will be given a one-week grace period after that to return the product. After that grace period ends, the chain will automatically sell them the product, less the rental fee. If the customers don't want to purchase the movie or game, they can return the product within 30 days for a credit, less a restocking fee.

SykkBoy 12-14-2004 02:28 PM

They'll lose a lot of income in late fees....I could see a 1 day grace period, but a week?
I know they are trying to compete with NetFlix, so probably have to do that to keep too many customers from fleeing

Maybe they'll make up for lost revenues from late fees by selling more videos and dvd's?

Peaches 12-14-2004 02:28 PM

I think as soon as people start "buying" a bunch of DVDs they don't want, Blockbuster won't look very attractive.

Wizzo 12-14-2004 03:26 PM

I think its a bad move... Not really sure what the benefit for them is, other than pissing off customers for the most part...

Also, I think Blockbuster could better counter Netflix by offering their monthly service and allow members to go into a store or order by mail... That way your free to order online like netflix, yet go into the store if you don't want to wait...

Nickatilynx 12-14-2004 03:40 PM

Its pretty much great for me.

Half the time I have vids so long I should have bought them in the first place.

Anthony 12-14-2004 03:48 PM

I rememember back in 1999/2000 me, Bishop, and Sykk rented out like 6 tapes and forgot to return for almost month.

We were in a hurry or something, and rather just complain, I paid off the late fees. I guess no one ever paid that much in late fees before.

Ahhhhhh... The road of excess...

Peaches 12-14-2004 03:54 PM

I was in a video store once where a lady was paying a ton in late fees to return an audio book about procrastination :P

Damn.

When I was a kid I couldn't remember where I left my book on improving your memory (by Harry Lorayne). My father still makes fun of me to this today.

haha, yeah
I think I flew back home or something and everyone just kind of forgot...
wasn't one of them "Magnolia" or some other movie that wasn't even that good in the first place?

Reminds me of some programs business models.
Oh wait Epoch turned off the prechecked cross sales!

JoesHO 12-14-2004 05:09 PM

I think it is a bad move too, but didn't they get sued some time ago for charging absorbant late fees, or erroneous late fees or something like that?

but if you are like me, and hate netflix because all of their movies are old, then this is great.

I watch movies the day they come out, most often.

so i think netflix is dumb.

or if you're like me and hate that Blockbuster won't carry NC17 or Unrated titles...you have to go with your favorite local underground mom and pop video store...or stick with 'Flix

I don't have time to watch movies the day they come out - the new releases are down below 100 on my Netflix list :( I move them up if it's one I really want to see, but many times the movies hit cable before I have a chance to watch them.

Netflix carries a lot of foreign films that I like.

And the nearest Blockbuster is about 60 miles away :awinky:

BTW, I liked Saved. Didn't love it though. 3.5 on a scale of 5. My all time "Pick on the hypocritical Jesus freaks" is still Citizen Ruth :)

I think I was just impressed by the performances of actors who don't normally impress me...
I liked Citizen Ruth too, Laura Dern was such a cutie in that movie

Bastards!!! When I bought my house I had to write a letter explaining why I had a Blockbuster fuck mark on my credit report.

"To Whom It May Concern........When I was 19 I rented a movie and forgot to return it for a week. Why? Because I was 19 and didnt give a shit. I never thought I would be 25 and explaining this to a mortgage company!"

Even better than one I sent..

Dear XXXX,

You're a cunt.

Yours etc...

KevinG 12-14-2004 07:15 PM

It's the best idea I've heard in the last 5 minutes.

I'm so happy that I now own those 435 videos that are sitting in my entertainment center.
