It would appear that many of the people on The Zoo seem to think you cant help friends / partners out without being employed by them.

http://www.thezoo.com/showthread.php?threadid=401181&s=

Personally i dont why people cant understand that to do a favor, means to get one in return, especially with all the politics that comes with working the adult industry.

Is it really that great a concept to the average webmaster that not everything is done as an employee for a company?

Your thoughts on this?

Lee 12-11-2004 04:34 AM

Okay to append to my previous post...

It srikes me that a lot of people seem to be under the illusion that individuals who dont work for someone else arent making any $ online.

Have sig whores embelished this myth into the minds of todays webmaster so much that it has become an accepted 'fact' of the industry? Or, does it just show that there is a lack of proper business understanding amongst those who are more prevallent on the various industry related forums?

Personally, despite its ups and downs, both financially and mentally, i would never even contemplate working for anyone but myself in the long run.

I just dont understand why the concept of working for ones self is so hard to comprehend to the general masses.

They're morons without the skills to make it on their own let alone to actually build a company.

A guy with over 10,000 posts who hasn't really done anything in the industry is thought of more highly by them than a guy quietly making 6-7 figures and not posting on the boards all day. If you're not hyperactive on the boards, you must be nobody...that's the new attitude. Board Whore truly has become a profession.

See thats what i mean exactly.

Is it only in our line of work that this is true though? I know we toyed with the idea of opening a mainstream PPP (Pay Per Post) webmaster forum a couple of yeas ago and when we asked a few people about the idea who are prevallent (sp?) in the mainstream world about the concept they literally laughed at the idea.

Why is it that in so many ways the porn world can be leaders yet in so many other ways they are still in somewhat of a third-world mindset?

It just baffles me beyond all comprehension that if you post on a board, 24/7 you are making a fortune while if you dont post 24/7 and dont mention how much income you make, you obviously arent worth shit.

Crazy times for sure, the sooner this part of the industrys evolution is over the better.

CuriousToyBoy 12-11-2004 05:07 AM

I understand you Lee.

People think I am a board whore.

Well fuck them.

I love being the type of guy that does what they do without really giving a shit what other people think.

I am only on boards (and then only in the last 6 months really) because my own businesses have reached the point that I can have some FUN.

Sure, I whore lots of stuff for other people - the common thread on the stuff I whore - they are ALL friends or business associates.

I use tracking codes even on my own stuff... I'm an analysis freak.

I don't understand though why someone who has been around as long as you have are letting it bother you so much though ?

I have no truck working for someone else, I would give up my shit tomorrow and work for someone else.....

IF they could afford me....

They can't.

Lindsay.. i hear you on the statistics stuff.. you should see how much shit i have to wade through each month that sponsors dont include in their reports... amount of lost 'hits' etc etc.

It doesnt really bother me per say i just find the whole way of thinking for people like that baffling, i mean it stands to reason someone posting 24/7 has to much time on their hands and arent making any half-decent amount of money which is why they have the need to whore themselves out for the nickel a post for ther sigs.

In reality, as far as i can tell, the only reason to have 10k posts on ANY board, is if you have been a regular on it for 4-5 years or, you own the board in question.

That's what I meant by I understand you ...

I have said in MANY places that post count GENERALLY means shit.

And I LOVE it when some moron on a board I am not very active on calls me a "newbie".

Ha ha ha ha ha.

Boards are a tool, and they work, as we all know, and also as we all know, we all work them differently.

I just also saw the thread on GFY and wondered what all the drama was about.

Anyways, on your point.....

I worked simultaneously on 3 PC's lined up side by side..

One is my workhorse with email and stuff that I sit in front of...

Next along are a lot of things I refer to regularly and all my IM's of the varying pedigrees and some continual script stuff....

The third has some scripting and peer-to-peer running 24/7, and EVERY board I am active on is also open 24/7..

Ready access as I roll my comfy chair up and down the room.

Like in the real office of life, the boards are the virtual water cooler, and ANYONE who has worked in a real business know how much time the "Neville's" in life spend by the water cooler or aimlessly wandering the office floor.

I am just surprised it's all just become such a big deal .....

It happens in any online community regardless of the focus. Familiarity breeds trust. Someone who posts a lot will consequently often become seen as an "expert" in whatever the topic of the given forum is, so long as they aren't a total moron or asshole. And sometimes even that can work for you.

And ain't that the truth.

I loved this one dude on another board who carried on like 20-bob racehorse about some shit with me, it was fucking hilarious.

He was an affiliate on one of my proggies and didn't even put the 2+2 together and work that out, but he had like 4k in posts on that board.

Starting crapping on about how he only worked with such-and-such (my proggie) and how he was the shining light of all affiliates and this and that and how I was an obvious newb with no money and no brains and how I wouldn't last 10 minutes in this biz.....

I called him out on PM with a screenshot of his last month and asked if he thought that people knowing that $200 per week was hardly what I would call THE shining light and that maybe he should put his brain into gear before putting his typing fingers into motion... In fairness, I did also say his account was safe regardless of what he carried on with, because I don't let others drag me down to their level generally....

Anyway, that thread died, as did his posting ANYWHERE I was near.

That was about 6 months ago... he has like tripled his "light" and even hits me up for help, but he doesn't post boards anymore.

That's story in it's entirety will be chapter in the book I write one day......

It's all good fun until someone loses an eye.

In that case there must be a lot of broke employers out there ;-)

KevinG 12-11-2004 07:50 AM

Good thread topic Lee. I agree with you. There are a lot of people that don't get it, but the ones that do will be here for the longer haul.

I try to keep a balance. I do a lot of favors and spend a certain amount of my time giving lots of help to different people. As much as I love what I do, the love of the work alone obviously doesn't pay the bills.

If you're offering services such as design, SEO, advertising and consulting like I do, you have billable hours for clients, and some pro-bono hours for your own PR to get future business, or as you referred to, doing a favor for someone that will return the favor when you need it.

Its fucking GFY.

What do you expect?

Your main protagonist is Fletch. A bigger drunk than I was , without the brains to quit.I mean , seriously.

I used to employ a few of the known names on that board as TGP builders (penquins) in my back office. At minimum wage and suffered unlimited taunting.

98% of the people on that board have never seen 10 joins in a day sustained. Let alone 100.

I have seen people I know make $1m pa ripped on by a bunch of punks that $10k pa!!!

And the peanut gallery believe the morons!!!

There are people on there worshipped as Gods that pushpills could and does shit on.

Lets be frank , most of that boards readers are SURFERS!

Mind you I hope to steal most of that boards inteligent posters over the next while... :)

It's not just the zoo, Lee, hate to burst your bubble but most folk are completely fucking incompetent uncooperative, worthless assholes who wouldn't piss on you if you were burning…unless your into that shit, but then you'll prolly have to pay them.

I've found that the most valuable key to doing business, mainstream and adult, is to work with people you know, like or/and trust/respect or people that you can easily control, manipulate and destroy.

Going into a deal with shady folk never works out 100% to your favor no matter how slick you think you are and how wide eyed and vigilant you will be. Paying attention to boards that are an unprofitable waste is a similar issue; a time suck at best, a source if irritation at least.

As your Spiritual and Recreational Advisor, I strongly suggest that you stay away from the zoo, et al. ---
