Im actually just looking for a little more clarification here about a topic which seems to be a few months old but which I have only just found out about.
According to the ICANN, if you request transfer on an unlocked domain, and the owner of that domain does not respond to that transfer within 5 days, the transfer is automatically approved. http://www.icann.org/transfers/policy-12jul04.htm Section 3, 5th Paragraph: Failure by the Registrar of Record to respond within five (5) calendar days to a notification from the Registry regarding a transfer request will result in a default "approval" of the transfer. Now I have all my domains locked down now which is fine, but is that to say that if i find a domain that is NOT locked down, and the owner dosen't check their email for 5 days, i could just request a transfer of that domain and it would all be approved? And this would be completely legal? Sorry if this topic has been raised before, but I am having trouble finding out if this is already a well known fact or not. <_< |
They seem to be referring to a transfer from one registrar to another, not a transfer of ownership of the domain...

Changing registars is pretty much the same as changing ownership, it all depends who owns the account with the registar. |
From what I understand Yug, you're right.....

Uhh Gigi, I think you'll find Yug was speaking metaphorically and you've just had a HUGE over reaction...
Yug, I can't remember the process for transferring a registrar but you could be right. Perhaps someone from DirectNic could clarify? |

I just wanted to bring this up as it seems to be something that everyone should be aware of, as it seems like if you dont lock your domains, you could be in for a world of hurt. I also was hoping more people could look into it to find out if my concerns are justified. |
*blush*
Sorry Yug...jumped the gun on that one. (I've been doing that alot lately) My bad. Now, as for the issue....as I said, from what I understand you are correct. From the top of the godaddy page: From November 8-10, we are sending an email to all domain customers informing you of a new domain transfer policy, enforced by ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). This policy dictates that we must honor any transfer requests, even if you do not personally confirm them. To prevent unauthorized transfers, lock your domains. This service is free and takes only a minute. That's how I found out. Made sure all my locks are in place. :) |
DirectNic crew?

Ive already opened a ticket on Directnic.

Ya know, I was thinking....if this really is going through....I can just imagine the money the lawyers are going to make afterward fighting to get domains back. :groucho: |

Excellent idea.... ;-))) so what domains would you try and steal...... be interesting to see what the most "steal worthy " domains are.. ;-))) |
Lock all your domains and you will be fine :)

Steve Cohen's lobbying of ICANN apparently worked.

That was actually the FIRST thing i thought of when i read this info earlier today. Someone is going to sure ICANN or whomever and become the next Kremen [hopefully with more business sense though]. |
Yeah ICANN makes some crazy rules, and registrars have to follow them.... It is definately not the best system going.
|
So lets say I know of a few good domains, where the owner is MIA (e-mail gives an error, mail is returned, phone is out) - would it be wrong to try the new ICANN feature on them? :awinky:

Once we have it, I will post it here. |

Did Netsol lock all of their domains last month? Prehaps something DirectNIC should do? |

Geezus I cant wait for that high school reunion. And i stole a loaf of bread once! ..... well, borrowed it ... not the whole loaf mind you, just a few slices ... and i bought a new loaf for them later anyway ... |
