This is my favorite quote....

“We must not let Internet technologies become a haven for criminals,” said Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas) after the committee voted to send both bills to the floor of the House.

Don't sensationalize things like that Gonzo... :)

Pairing p2p with spyware in a bill thats just made it out of the House and not even into the Senate won't fly. Especially since p2p got a reprieve a couple weeks ago when the RIAA got slapped down.

:)

KK how come I can never see your avatar ??

Just wondering

Sensationalism? Nah thats just creative marketing!

cj 09-10-2004 05:51 AM

what's to sensationalize?

hooper relies on toolbars, the business model is under jeopardy! remember, he owes a lot of hours to webmasters for spyware removal who know he's full of shit about what his toolbar does!!

hmmm ... hooper relies on spyware ... someone else relies on exit consoles that are now blocked more often than not ... my my, isn't the environment changing.

:bjump:

Hell Puppy 09-10-2004 09:42 PM

My guess is exit traffic being blocked is taking a bite out of just about everyone's wallet.

grimm 09-10-2004 10:01 PM

then how come the prevailing business model is paid for downloading and sharing. industry indicators dont lie. if the industry can tell which way the breeze is blowing, then they have to get on their horse and get a head start.

As for toolbars. Check the prevailing marketing strategy there. google, ESPN, now major news sites make you jump through hoops to install their toolbars. ESP when it is bidirectional like ESPN's fantasy toobar.

RawAlex 09-10-2004 11:06 PM

Grimm, the difference is that ESPN uses "marketting techniques" to get you to download their toolbar - they don't sneak it in the back door using a hack / security violation to do it.

Toolbars (since google first put one out there) have been known to be a good business model. Getting more people to install your toolbar puts you in a position to talk to those clients every time they are online, bettering the chance they return to your site and bettering the chance that they will use you when they decide to make a purchase or look for that purchase. It pumps up the page views, pumps up the visibility, and so on.

Most adult toolbars are NOT helpful, they are a hinderance. They get between the surfer and the net and return what the toolbar owners want the surfer to see, not what the surfer is looking for. Many of them modify the hosts and other files to assure that people don't get where they want, but get where they are suppose to go. It isn't unusual to see hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of popular link sites, tgps, and search engines get redirected to the "toolbar" search page.

Some of them are more subtle, watching for hits to adult paysites and changing the referal codes so as to absorb sales. Some of them don't even show as toolbars, rather hide in the weeds playing games.

Most surfers till don't know what malware is, and have little or no knowledge on how to remove it. Surfers on dialup are unlikely to ever get the full microsoft updates, so they are vunerable as hell.

People who install anything on a system without permission should be held as the hackers they are and subjected to the patriot act - who knows, maybe they are intending to use the comprimised systems to commit a terrorist act against the internet? :-)

uhh alex. that was my point.

you think i think what hooper is doing is good? nope:)

grimm 09-10-2004 11:26 PM

my point was that you should HAVE to jump through hoops to install ANYTHING on your system. and know exactly what it is

No, it's not, since there's a huge difference between p2p and spyware. There's also a huge difference between a legitimate download and spyware, whether it's toolbars, search boxes, or poker games.

Once again, stop sensationalizing. ;)

cj 09-11-2004 04:26 AM

KK, we know there's a big difference ... its hooper who has trouble understanding.

in his words, his toolbar is never installed without permission, doesn't touch the ie settings in any way and is easy to remove first go using the removal tool.

we aren't disputing the differences between legit downloads and spyware, we are disputing hoopers claims to be a legit download. :okthumb:
