I have ALWAYS loved and lived by:

NEVER argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level and beat you with experience

One of my dad's big lines was "don't sweat the small stuff."

When my father passed away, I had a friend who's father passed away when he was very young. At my father's wake he pulled me aside and said:

"Andrew, I know everyone is telling you how sorry they are right now, and I know it doesn't really make you feel any better. People just don't know what to say at a time like this... I will be honest with you though and tell you from my experience. It never gets any easier, but you will get used to it."

That was probably the most honest, and most helpful consolation anyone could have given me...

Now ev’ry gambler knows that the secret to survivin’
Is knowin’ what to throw away and knowing what to keep.
’cause ev’ry hand’s a winner and ev’ry hand’s a loser,
And the best that you can hope for is to die in your sleep.

Life moves pretty fast. If you dont stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it.

Glad I read that Andrew.

If you fly by the seat of your pants,

You either soar like an eagle

Or you crash and burn.

There is no in between.

Lack of planning on your part does NOT constitute a crisis on my part.

To err is human, to repeat is stupid

It's all fun and games until you get your scrotum caught in the door

There are no stupid questions, only stupid people

I was looking for this one Benjamin Franklin quote I love (to get the exact wording correct). Still haven't found it, but as I was looking I found a few quotes from Benji that work well here.

For board posters everywhere:
"Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more difficult still, to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment."

For weasels everywhere:
"A man wrapped up in himself makes a very small bundle."

As my mother once said to me, she said "Russell, (she always called me Russell damn her) She said "Russell, always say "I think" in front of whatever you are going to say, that way you don't sound like such a know it all and you will never be wrong"

Look out kid
Don't matter what you did
Walk on your tip toes
Don't try "No Doz"
Better stay away from those
That carry around a fire hose
Keep a clean nose
Watch the plain clothes
You don't need a weather man
To know which way the wind blows

Get sick, get well
Hang around a ink well
Ring bell, hard to tell
If anything is goin' to sell
Try hard, get barred
Get back, write braille
Get jailed, jump bail
Join the army, if you fail
Look out kid
You're gonna get hit
But users, cheaters
Six-time losers
Hang around the theaters
Girl by the whirlpool
Lookin' for a new fool
Don't follow leaders
Watch the parkin' meters

Ah get born, keep warm
Short pants, romance, learn to dance
Get dressed, get blessed
Try to be a success
Please her, please him, buy gifts
Don't steal, don't lift
Twenty years of schoolin'
And they put you on the day shift
Look out kid
They keep it all hid
Better jump down a manhole
Light yourself a candle
Don't wear sandals
Try to avoid the scandals
Don't wanna be a bum
You better chew gum
The pump don't work
'Cause the vandals took the handles

"To love is to suffer. To avoid suffering one must not love. But then one suffers from not loving. Therefore to love is to suffer, not to love is to suffer. To suffer is to suffer. To be happy is to love. To be happy then is to suffer. But suffering makes one unhappy. Therefore, to be unhappy one must love, or love to suffer, or suffer from too much happiness. I hope you're getting this down" ~ Woody Allen, Love and Death

Thanks Chris. :)

It really was true. I don't think you ever truly get over losing a loved one. You'll always miss them, think about them, etc... but in time you *do* get used to it.

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;
If you can dream---and not make dreams your master;
If you can think---and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:.
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build'em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
And never breathe a word about your loss:
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings---nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And---which is more---you'll be a Man, my son!

Couldn't find the exact phrasing of that Franklin one, but it goes something like:

"Be prepared for the worse; if it happens, you're not caught by surprise; if the worse doesn't happen, then every other result will be a pleasant one."

I think among the best business quotes I know of are:

"Adapt, adapt, adapt."

and

"In Chinese the pictogram for 'Crisis' is the same as 'Opportunity'."

Now I *really* like that one.

Another in a similar vein on planning I like....

The really great thing about not planning is that failure comes as a total surprise and is not preceeded by great amounts of stress and worry
