My favorite war protest... you can tell the protestors sense something is afoot with this guy, but they just can't put their finger on it. He owned them.

the idea of "peace" and "War is not the answer" and similar mantras assume that NO ONE is willing to, or will take advantage of those who believe in the idea.
most wars begin by one side taking advantage of the fact that those being attacked either can't or won't defend themselves or are incapable of defending themselves. this is a funny trap that Liberals walk into. They have to defend the idea of "peace" with moronic ideas that "there must be another way" which leads them further down a one way street of poor logic and indefensible arguments that cannot address the realities of brutal and murderous rulers who will stop at nothing and kill everyone in their path when the need arises. |

I have more in common with you, Buffy, than I do with the "give peace a chance" crowd. My reasons for disapproving of the war in Iraq has much more to do with priorities and tactics than it does with the idea that "war is not healthy for children and other living things."
Or is that idea just too complex for you to absorb? |

ok.. .substitute "liberal" with hippy protestor or any word that fits those who are quick to protest and chant "war is not the answer" yet have no answers themselves. BTW, i never listen to Rush Limbaugh. He is annoying and repetitive and often seems to be trying much much much too hard... much harder than should be necessary if his points were as valid as he hypes them to be. I listened the other day driving through California because there was nothing else on and i could only stand it for a few minutes before it was just too annoying for me. |
Ok should I take this to mean that the terms tree hugger and liberal and not interchangeable?
Maybe that's my challenge or where there is a problem understanding? |
Meni, here's your chance.
Please educate us all on how to STOP outsourcing. |

But that makes it like an IQ test question If all tree huggers are liberals but not all liberals are tree huggers then how are we supposed to know the difference? :yowsa: If all liberals and all tree huggers believe in social reform, welfare and distrubtion of wealth through whatever means yadda, yadda, yadda ..... :zoinks: |

I've never seen a hell of a lot of difference in the intellectual capabilities of folks who use phrases like "all conservatives are racist, ignorant, beer drinking talk radio fans" and those who refer to liberals as "treehuggers" "sheep" "guilt-ridden white people", etc.
There is such an abundent supply of folks who confuse the ability to repeat jingoistic phrases with thinking that neither side is deprived of their fair share of them. Last edited by PornoDoggy at Mar 21 2004, 11:18 PM |
You want to make a comment on my intellectual capability? Feel free. Clearly you are the only intelligent, informed individual in the universe.

I do love how anyone that thinks the war in Iraq was a bad idea is lumped into a category. Like that one opinion defines one's political association. Wrap your noodle around this one. There are some people that were for the war in iraq, that think a woman has the right to abort her child. Holy shit. :o
Say it isn't so. |

I'm an odd liberal leaner...
I'm registered as a Libertarian, yet a lot of my views fall more left than right treehugger? check. I'm not sure about the rest of you, but have this crazy notion that we need to keep our environment cleaned up so my kids don't have to drink tainted water or live next to a nuclear waste dump or wade through tons of garbage to see a couple trees and appreciate nature... distribution of wealth? nope, I'm a firm believer in helping our less fortunate and downtrodden, but I'm also big on spending those dollars for more education and areas where the person recieving the money can get something more out of it (low income housing, etc.). I've just never viewed compassion as a weakness. anti-war? sure, I'd much rather live in a utopian society where it was peace and singing all the time, but I'm realistic enough to know that we also need to have an adequate defense. I was actually for going into Afghanistan, but felt and still feel that Iraq was and still is an error. Imagine if Saddam Hussein wanted to liberate us Americans from our current evil dictator? I also find it funny that so many people who were all for going in and bombing the shit out of more brown people in Iraq have never actually served their country to begin with. I guess it's easier to send someone else's son or daughter into battle to die. I just think it's absolutely tragic we spend more money on bombing brown people than we spend on teaching our children to read. I sometimes wonder if we only start bombing people so our school students can finally find places like Iraq and Afghanistan on a map ;-) Maybe all of the increased FCC fines against "indecency" can be used to buy more schoolbooks....but I'm sure that money will just go to buy more bombs.... |

I personally don't put much stock in the "bombs vs. butter" arguements. This is a nasty, nasty world we live in. There are all kinds of folks out there with reasons (real or imagined) to attack or challenge the United States. Nothing we can do about that except prepare to meet the challeges, which means that some schools can't be built because we gotta buy some bombs. Wouldn't hurt us to select targets for those bombs that actually present a clear threat to the United States, though. |

Why do we depend on someone teaching our children to read when that is a pleasure to be reserved for parents? Broken record time - a child's primary education comes at home, the education they receive at school is a secondary education Good Post PD! |
Dear Meni,
Hello buddy, its me! your old friend Reality. These last couple weeks have been hectic considering our Lord, God and Savior Howard Stern might be getting pulled off the air. Being sophisticated like you, I just don't understand how we can go on living without Methane Man, the guy who farts music. Meni, I am sorry we have completely lost touch with each other for the last few months, I hope we can get back together soon and make up for lost time. Anyway, I am just writing you to let you know that South Park is just a cartoon on cable TV. Cable TV is not network TV or radio. Please start taking better care of yourself... you are starting to crack and people are starting to wonder. Your long lost pal, Reality |

I would expect their education to be worthwhile and would expect them to learn more in that 7 hours than they regularly do. While I enjoy the luxury of having that time to spend with my children, many parents don't. There are a lot of single mothers (and fathers) out there, sometimes working 2 jobs to keep a roof over their children's heads and just don't always have the time. I agree a good education starts in the home, but that should also extend to school, otherwise, we may as well just shut down the schools and do 100% home teaching. I grew up with parents who weren't stupid, but weren't highly educated either, so thanks to a great school disctrict, caring teachers and a special teacher in the 3rd grade who really challenged me to learn, I got an education that I might not have gotten otherwise. My oldest son has an anxiety disorder that has caused some learning difficulties and without the benefit of some great and caring teachers at his school, he could be one of those kids who falls through the cracks. One great teacher can turn a child around and if that teacher is unable to "afford" to be a teacher, they might seek employment elsewhere and they are lost to potentially thousands of children who could've benefitted from them. |
Lance, you cannot equate the $$$ spent on education with a good education. The City of Atlanta spends more per child than any other school system in GA yet continues to have the lowest scores, more dropouts, lowest grades, etc. Right now I believe they are spending around $10K a year per student. Take that exact same $10K and give it to a private school and see the difference in education. And incredibly, the teachers at that private school are making LESS money than the public school teachers so even giving teachers a higher salary won't make a difference, IMHO.

Meni - while your recent "political awaking/awareness" is commendable please give it a while to get a little more perspective
and you really make my point again ........ You are with your child for the child's entire life! I believe you and I both have children and we are not the primary custodial parents (I have shared custody and live in the same house with my son) and I work an amount of hours equal or above what a single parent working two jobs does and yes I have time to be with, teach and love my son everyday EDUCATION BEINGS AT HOME PARENTS ARE A CHILD'S PRIMARY EDUCATION - and that's just not reading, writing and arithmetic It's everything ..... from how they speak and treat themselves and well as others .... through table manners, how to carry themselves, how to thrive and if need be how to survive - a whole lifetime of things and thinking, learning how to learn Passing along family, values and stories and yes it is challenging for a single parent holding down two jobs to be there and make the time and effort, to make sure their children are in the best possible facility when they are not there and ... .... it's pretty damn rewarding too - for both parents and children |

You have a lot to offer your daughter You have a lifetime of experience and knowledge You have what you learned from your parents to start with Successful people who worked hard and from their dedication and hard work were able to come to the USA and then go back to Greece when they wanted What you teach your children isn't just reading, writing and arithmetic |

I've managed to get fairly entrenched in my childrens' school and find out what's going on and keeping educated myself. Too often people DON'T question where the money goes in their school districts, they don't get involved enough. Sadly, my kids go to school with the children of these people. People that barely know the name of the principal of the school, people that don't attend school-parent meetings, people who don't get involved. Hell, maybe I'll just hire my kids' teachers to become full time tutors to my kids and I'll teach them TGPing on the side... |

Just for the record, I know many single parents (both moms and dads) who work *and* homeschool their multiple children in different grade levels.
It can be done. It's hard as hell, but it can be done. And the parents shouldn't be a supplement to a teacher's education, the teacher should be a supplement to the education the child is already receiving at home. (If teachers/schools are involved at all.) A parent teaches their child to walk, talk (an impossible feat in itself, especially in this country with its never-ending blend of different languages that have worked their way into what used to be called "English"), so many things... and then thinks that for some crazy reason they're not qualified enough to keep teaching that child just because s/he turns 5. You know your child better than any teacher ever could. You know his learning styles, how fast/slow he gets something, how to present it so that it makes perfect sense to him, how to work through things like his "growth spurts" and temper tantrums... All kids are different. Public school is standardized. One teacher trying to apply a generic, standardized method of teaching to 30 kids with completely different learning styles/methods and expecting them to all react the same way is just... preposterous. Bah... this is like a broken record. :) |
