But on an international basis, I can only think of Idi Amin. Those weren't skeletons in his closet. They were leftovers. |

You are right about Billy being baggage (although he wasn't the first or the worst "First Brother" to get into hot water) ... but other than him, Peaches is right - he was the cleanest I can think of. |

I can tell you all US Presidents are flawed
The Enforcer turned me onto to a good book "Presidential Ambition" which goes into detail how every US President dropped their drawers to get the job (except Washington) For the 20th century my choice would be Theodore Roosevelt but he ummm... had some interesting things happen as well |

Truman had Pendergast, but he was pretty clean other than that.
Actually, although my maternal Grandfather will roll over in his grave and haunt me for saying this, I believe that Hoover was pretty clean before getting into office too (went on a presidential biography reading quest many years ago). |
History has tried hard to teach us that we can't have good government under politicians. Now, to go and stick one at the very head of the government couldn't be wise.

That does it - Ferdinand and Meg for president and vice-president in 2004!! All payments can be in dog treats, chewies, stuffed toys and tummy rubs :) :salute: |

Ron Paul. No baggage. Honest.

The further back in time a leader is the more perfect they often appear to be. We don't name our politicians "Honest Abe" anymore. Today we'd rip a president like Lincoln apart. Hell, he was torn apart in his day too. Most of us just don't know that. Can you image if Bush suspended Habeas Corpus? |

Anyone who is as pure as the driven snow has no business in politics , business or life for that matter , for if you've accumulated no skeletons , you haven't really lived.
The sooner that the electorate realise this , the better. :-))) |

The general populace (and electorate) desire someone or something they can admire and respect and may look for that in their elected officials the rub being politics is a very dirty job |

In my opinion....
Harry Truman was probably the most skeleton-free modern President we've had. He "accidentally" became President when FDR died in 1944, was known as "Give 'em hell Harry", a congressman known for his honesty and spicy langauge before that. As President he went through hell and back getting this country out of WWII, dropping the A-bombs on Japan, the Korean War, the firing of Douglas McArthur (where his popularity ratings dropped 23 points below Nixon at his lowest) and the beginning of the McCarthy era. Truman's personal life was never questioned, and by all accounts he was a faithful husband. (FDR died in the arms of his mistress and Eisenhower had his 'secretary" for years). Truman was quite poor for most of his life (so no money scandals, ala Clinton and the Bushes). He had no siblings to discredit him while in office (Billy Carter, Roger Clinton, and Neil Bush). |

Voted for Ron Paul when I was living in Texas. Edit to note that it was the last time I voted and that I do not see anyone that I would vote for today at any level. Last edited by wig at Mar 17 2004, 02:16 PM |

Which was the cross-dressing president?
|
No matter how healthy a man's morals may be when he enters the White House, he comes out again with a pot-marked soul.

  However, the crossdressing reports were from a highly disreupable source, and it is more likey he was just gay: "But as a matter of fact, the alleged transvestitism of John Edgar Hoover, director of the FBI from 1924 until his death in 1972, has never been established, and reputable historians say it's an urban legend. The story probably got its start because of much more plausible rumors that J. Edgar was gay. He and his right-hand man, Clyde Tolson, were constant companions for more than 40 years, even vacationing together, and both remained lifelong bachelors. (Hoover lived with his mom until she died in 1938.) They say Richard Nixon, on hearing of Hoover's death, exclaimed with his customary delicacy, "Jesus Christ! That old cocksucker!"." http://www.straightdope.com/columns/021206.html |
how about the 21st century?

I really don't understand how having a dumb fuck/piece of shit for a relative is a "skeleton" in one's closet or makes them "unclean" in any manner.
|
Well... I voted for a skeleton a few years ago... fucker won too... Unfortunately this left Ashcroft unemployed and we all see where
that led... |
