2 Questions:

Is there anyone here they does not use DirectNic?

If not, why not?

chodadog 03-02-2004 01:04 AM

I've used DirectNic a couple of times, but really, the only thing that's putting me off them is that you guys don't allow folks to pay with paypal. I use registerfly for that reason. That, and RF is cheaper, with all the same features (if my memory serves me correctly). Bit slow on support, though.

But yeah. Save a few bucks with another reliable registrar, and the convenience of paypal.

PayPal is something we are working on. They are not the easiest company to deal with, and there has been a rash of fraud lately.

Carrie 03-02-2004 01:24 AM

I don't, and the reason is cost.
When you have a ton of domains, the difference of a few dollars each really adds up.

Yeah, that's true. That was one of my reasons. I've registered over 100 domains at registerfly, and when you take into account renewals, etc, a differnece of 5 bucks adds up very quickly, as you said. Especially when there's no real difference between the two. (besides the speed of the support)

Hard to make deals on 2 domains.

We have to make a profit somehow. Customer service is expensive.

While I am not against outsourcing, we have decided at DirectNIC to get the best customer service, and we think that is provided by employees in our office in New Orleans.

When you make your millions you will understand.

"Have to make a profit" - damn, you capitalists are all alike. :D

I don't own a ton of domains. All but one is on Directnic, and I'll be moving that one over before it expires. Yeah, I know I can do it cheaper elsewhere, but I know the reputation of Directnic is rock-solid ....

even if I have questions about the political donations made by some of the owners

slavdogg 03-02-2004 02:37 AM

Directnic is definatly one of the best registrars all around

support, security, ease of use, tools, all good

price is a the least of my concerns

Dravyk 03-02-2004 05:41 AM

Mike, Direct Nic has a great reputation and very nice services.

The only reason I don't use DN is because the one I started with (after leaving NetSol, where all we old timers started) is that that they have never once treated me wrong and continue to treat me with superlative service. (That would be Gord and DomainNameSystems.) So in short, if the wheel isn't broken, no need to go looking for a new wheel.

If anything were ever to change over there (not that I excpect it to at all), but if it did, then DN would be at the top of my list.

*shrug* Can only go by my own personal experiences, buddy; just as we all do.

GrimShawn 03-02-2004 07:16 AM

Actually directnic is about the only place I have never had a problem at

Red 03-02-2004 07:28 AM

I love DN. I've got several of my domains there. I've never had a problem and I appreciate the fact that they remind me and keep reminding me when it's time for renewal. I used to be very bad about renewing until I lost redserotica.com Now I listen to DN when they tell me to get off my ass and renew. The customer service has been great.

(this has been an unpaid endorsement) :D

sarettah 03-02-2004 08:55 AM

I have 5 or 6 domains with directnic and the rest still over at register.com.

I have considered transferring all of them to directnic but register.com gives me the ability to point the domains where I want by ip number, not just nameserver. This allows me to point stuff at my home server when I want to use one for play or for testing purposes. The only complaint I have on DN is not having that ability.

So, Mike, can you give me that ability ? and if you can, what kind of price to transfer 12 or 13 domains (not a big bunch, but not 2...lol) over to you guys for a two year hitch ?

mojobill 03-02-2004 09:00 AM

I have several hundred domains at DirectNic, and I would not consider any other registrar..... as was stated, price is a secondary consideration

Grimm saved my ass when there were 'issues' with another registrar, for which I will be eternally grateful, and will not consider anyone else....

Peaches 03-02-2004 09:45 AM

I finally have all my domains at DN (except for the ones that were taken from me from another registrar..... ).

They have quantity discounts and I think the last time I renewed they were around $12 each.

And geeze - if I have a problem, I can contact the owners - you can't put a price on that, IMHO!! :)

Carrie 03-02-2004 09:57 AM

Ewww... you *had* to go mention that nasty evil Netsol name... *hissssssssssssssssssss*
God how I STILL loathe them.

Bestat 03-02-2004 10:42 AM

Sorry :( Not with DN, like Drav I have had nothing but great service from my registar (CWNIC) and though there may be cheaper places out there, service is what matters to me. They offer the renewal notices, bulk rates etc too, and always answer thier phone, which is a big plus. :)

B)

Robert 03-02-2004 10:50 AM

About half my domains have been moved to DirectNic. :okthumb: Can't say more until the rest have been transfered away from potential harm.

Bishop 03-02-2004 10:59 AM

I've had all my domains at domainnamesystems.com for years.. I didn't think I would ever get them all moved away from Network Solutions.. I have not given any thought to moving them haven't had any problems. I just pay the renewals and go on about life..

Yeah, anyone using Gord, will deserve what they get. I have literally seen dozens of problems, most of them stem from Gord being vendictive to people who want to move their domains.

It is one thing to have an amateur setup, but Gord has no concept of what being a proffesional is.

Drav I am happy you have had good experiences, but it is a rarity with Gord.

I don't use DN because i've had my domains at the same place for ages and its virtually impossible to transfer without paying for them all over again ...

I use fabulous.com when registering domains for clients because their system is good for newbies.

If someone at directnic would do the fucking around to gather and change my domains i'd switch, but it would be a lot of pain in the butt for not many domains ;-)

and i definately don't want customer service outsourced to india for the sake of keeping cost down.

Toolz 03-03-2004 10:43 AM

Been with Domainnamesystems for a long time and lazy I guess. Have over 50 domains so I'm getting the discount, want to set me to $12 initially to start? I'll renew all my stuff over there as it comes up.

10-domains.com 6.75 when you buy 100 credits at a time, easy breezey mass purchase with credits, automatically set to your default info and dns.

Mass renew is easy, and mass edit is way easy.

If buying bulk, go 10-domains or similar and save your cash. If it's going to be a paysite, se, etc. , pay the 15 with direct nic.

:gbounce:

Ya know, that's an oft repeated thing I hear:

Basicially, if you don't care about your domain, go with fill-in-cheap-registrar-here.com

But for those domains that really matter, DirectNic :awinky:

That tells ya something...... :okthumb:

pushpills 03-03-2004 01:11 PM

I have some long-term valueable ones with 10-domains, as long as its on registrar lock and I print out my lists just for reassurance, I'm not too worried about actually losing em, just maybe going down for a few days.

But yea, if it's deffinately a high priority, DN.

MikeFold 03-03-2004 01:49 PM

Mike...I'll throw my 2 cents here for ya..

I use NatNames since their inception, as you might expect from me, its simply a loyalty issue as Tony and I go way back, and I always get great customer service.

I have an account at DN [i think] but to keep things simple I host an NatNet and register with the same. More than once, I had phone calls in addition to the email reminders to renew.

If NatNAmes did not exist, I would probably use DN.

Mike, I understand loyalty 100%

Just remember you are not using NatNames you are using TuCows.

DirectNIC is ICANN accredited. While it sounds impressive, the reality is we have a lot more control and pull if domains gets put into a bind. Being ICANN approved means we can get a lot more done on our own rather then having to go through disinterested middle men.

Frank 03-03-2004 06:14 PM

I've now switched all 30 plus of my domains to DirectNic, many from Yahoo who were good a while back but are totally incompetant now - DirectNic's support is second to none - it has very friendly staff who actually know what they are talking about too.

Yes, price *is* a concern, but customer service overules price for me if there's not a great deal of difference. Only complaint I have is that the pop email servers sometimes play up.

Ryan 03-03-2004 08:36 PM

Amen and a HUGE ditto!

It is WAY worth it to me to know that Matt & the crew will fight to get my domains if someone decides to take them or that I shouldn't be able to control them.

I wouldn't trust ANYONE else - The money I would have lost had I lost domains at another registrar who decided to take my money, sell me domains that weren't saleable and lock my account would pay for any difference in price for years and years to come.

There's something to be said for having the owners of a registrar accessible, ethical, on the ball, willing to fight for clients and IN the same business we are.
