I am going to begin donating 10% of net website sales to charity. I'm thinking of the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Feed The Children.

The 10% will be sent DIRECTLY FROM CCBill so the charity will receive a weekly check on my behalf.

This donation will NOT affect affiliate pay in any way. The 10% will come directly out of MY paycheck. My "Single Girl" sites will not apply. But both AmateurMarket.net and NakedCollegeGirls.tv will be included in this.

What is your favorite charity? And why should I choose that charity?

This is serious. I am going to implement the donations THIS WEEK. If more of us did this, not only would we help make the world a better place, but we just might change a few opinions about our industry (maybe VISA would even soften up a bit).

Anyway, once my charity has been chosen, I'll make a big announcement.

PLEASE NOTE: This is 10% of Credit Card and Check sales. I will soon be installing a dialer and web900 option (thanks for adding those, CCBill). I don't know how those work quite yet, but if the monies from those go to my primary account number like the Credit Cards and Checks, those will be included also.

cause based marketing has been done to death. i hate that shit. i hate walking in a restaraunt that has a plaque on the wall telling me they give money to kids somewhere. if they do ... fine... it's great... BUT if their interest in helping people was genuine, it would not be used as a marketing tool and i personally would not need to know about it. i would rather just sit down and eat my meal without feeling like i am being treated like an idiot.

ps: change your nickname to "benandjerry" for better results.

I give to these guys myself.

I'm just glad they're out there doing the work they are. They are deserving of support.

Charity begins at home

VooMan 02-05-2004 10:42 AM

I have always been a fan of Saint Jude's Childrens Hospital. My father went on a tour of Saint Judes one time, and because he was a doctor he got to see a lot of behind the scenes stuff. He was totally blown away by the work they do and from that point forward Saint Jude's was his favorite charity.

After my dad passed away, we donated all of his medical equipment to a friend of his who was with Doctors Without Borders.

I don't think you could go wrong with either organization...

Evil Chris 02-05-2004 11:28 AM

Any sick children's charity.

One of the best IMHO in Canine Companions http://www.caninecompanions.org/ the work they do to help people live independant lives is fantastic.

I have no idea who you are. Are you a habitual pessimist? Businesses are constantly challenged to donate to charity when they see their competitors doing it. They try to "one-up" each other and the charities end up benefitting.

I was challenged to start doing this when I noticed ALSScan.com donates a percentage of their 1 Year sign ups to children's charities. I thought, "Hey, why don't *I* do that too? But instead of donating only percentages of 1 year joins, I'll donate on ALL credit card and check sign ups."

AND I'm hoping other webmasters will follow suit.

Let's say I donate $50,000 to St. Jude Children's hospital.... do you think the receiving families whose children's lives are saved will give a f--ck whether or not someone on an adult webmaster board feels sick and tired of hearing people using "charitable donations" as a "marketing tool"?

For some reason, I really don't think they will.

Anyone who makes big annoucements regarding donating to charity is not doing it for the right reason. When I see people brag, or talk about donating to charity as part of a marketing plan, I like JR, immediately get turned off. ( does not matter if its porn or non-porn)

Does St. Jude's have an annual radio drive in your area? I know they do in mine. The bigger businesses all call in and try to outdo each other. Usually the only people that are heard bitching about it are the larger companies that DO NOT want to donate and don't appreciate receiving the "challenge" from their fellow business owners.

Uh, yeah - right. You might want to sit down and ask charities how much of that "pledged" money they actually collect. Getting someone to say it is one thing, especially when it makes you look good - collecting it is a completely different matter. :(

Since Serge is out of town, I will retell a story.

About 6 years ago, when Serge was on a board telling people something about how much he donated, or was going to donate R-n Levi ( FM) tols Serge he was being an idiot. Serge responded that R-n was just greedy, and being a big guy did not donate money to charity. R-n laughed and responded with a bet, he bet Serge that the year before that R-n donated more money to charities then Serge made....

Serge did not take the bet, he knew then that R-n while a putz, did donate large amounts to charities, but did not need to brag about it in public. That day Serge swore to himself that he too would make enough money that R-n could not beat him in another bet like that.

The people I know who donate the most, are the ones who keep it low key. The people who do the radio thing, or the auctions for charity are a little different situation, since its a way to increase donations in a friendly competative way. Though I not huge fans of that either.

Since you seem to be making a challenge, do you want to place a friendly bet over who has donated more to charity the past 5 years? 50k winnr send all proceeds to their favorite charity? :D

Whether or not I get a better result at other boards is really of no consequence to me.

It is easy to say one donates "time or money" when they also claim to do so anonymously. When someone comes onto a board and makes a public announcement, that announcement sort of binds them to follow through. Anonymous donations can go away easily when there is no one to be accountable to... I'm not saying anonymous donations aren't a good thing. Of course they are... but accountability also breeds responsibility. Know what I mean?

Charity begins at home... yes it does. We agree on that 100%. Let's say that everything at home is great... then what? Time to help others? I'd say so...

VooMan 02-05-2004 12:06 PM

One thing I will say...

When my dad passed away, we asked that people make a donation to St. Judes in lieu of sending flowers. For a long time after that we recieved notices from St. Judes saying "a donation has been made by (insert name) in memory of..."

The one I liked the best was "a donation has been made by (a friend) in memory of..." Whoever it was did that every month for a few years, and I always respected the fact that the person wanted to remain anonymous...

Mike,

Of course I don't want to make that bet with you. I have no doubts you donate to charity. I also know "who you are" and realize the amount of income you must earn.

But the point is this:

MANY of the people in this industry do not do enough. If I can raise awareness by challenging others, so be it. We're talking PERCENTAGES here. If my challenge convinces even a small newbie webmaster to donate a percentage of his income, someone benefits. Even if that percentage is a very small amount of money.

Some people will obviously talk shit about what I'm doing. This thread has proven that. But I am going to follow through and continue letting people know about it. Un-ashamedly.

I can understand your concerns. I would never claim to try to be a "moral compass" for anyone.

But let's say that someone (I am not saying "YOU") has made a 'personal decision' NOT to do anything for anybody.

But let's say Donovan and John both run sites in the same niche. Let's say Donovan makes it publicly known that 10% of his net sales go to a children's charity.

Let's say John is one of the people that has made a 'personal decision' NOT to donate a dime to charity.

Then let's say John starts finding affiliates in his niche are choosing Donny's program over John's program and also learns that the deciding factor was that affiliates liked the idea that the traffic they sent somehow helped a charity. What does John do?

Well, if the pain was great enough, John would implement a similar donation program.

And others would benefit.

And then (WAY out on a limb) the next time Dateline did an "expose" on the adult industry, it just MIGHT be possible they'd mention something like, "We were shocked to find out that many of these adult webmasters aren't the scamming criminals we've always portrayed them to be... we've found that over the last year, the adult industry has donated an impressive $1 Billion dollars to various children's charities."

While that last paragraph is unlikely to happen any time soon, is there any reason why it couldn't possibly happen SOME DAY?

One can always hope.

Vick 02-05-2004 12:37 PM

Vick,

Thanks. :)

99.99% would definitely choose the program that makes them the most money. Of course. That's why I mentioned in the original post that affiliate pay will not be affected by this. All donations come out of MY pocket, not that of my affiliates.

Thanks again for the discussion.

For some reason, I really don't think they will.

i would say that when i post, i tend to be fairly cynical. the message board is a marketing and promotional tool, nothing more. thats why everyone is here.

its great to give to charity. really great. but it can also be a tragic waste in what is nothing more than a feel good move or marketing ploy.

I dont think a recieving family cares about the blah blah blah. you are not the recieving family. you are the guy hoping to exploit the recieving family which contradicts the very concept of charity. that has always bothered me. cause based marketing to me is sort of offensive. i dont mind when its about saving the rain forest by buying a particular brand of food... i mind when its about exploiting a 4 year old girl with 3rd degree burns on 90% of her body for financial gain.

most organized charities are clusterfucks as someone pointed out already. federal tax law requires them to give away only 5% of their total net worth every year (used to be maybe recent changes occured). it was only a few years ago when they began to finally limit the salaries of directors and other "paid consultants" of charities who were paying themselves the bulk of the money taken in.

if you want to be a good guy go find a girl who needs a liver in a hospital and pay for it. that would be an amazing act and you would not need to impress us by letting us know about it. you could just go help the little girl.
