My favorite was Earl Campbell.
Second favorite was Bo Jackson. |
I remember when Bo Jackson ran over Brian Bosworth (who was suppose to be the second coming) for a long TD run and right into the tunnel.
My favorite was Walter Payton. |
Jack Lambert. Got to love a man who says if you want to protect the quarterback, put him in a dress.
Colin I remember a Monday Night game between Houston and Pittsburgh where Howard Cosell just got the words out that no one player could take down Earl Cambell, immeadiatly followed by Mel Blount knocking Cambell 15 yards off the field. EC was a freaking tank though, one of the few player from that era I think could have been just as successful in todays game. |

Was very sorry to see Barry Sanders leave the game when he did |
Jack Lambert, he's not a big guy but no one could put the fear of god into a RB or QB like he could. I'll never forget the play in the AFC championship game where he absolutely planted Earl Campbell into the ground on a 4th down play. Earl could run over anyone, except Jack.
My favorite story about Lambert is that in his rookie training camp the vets used to make all the rookies sing their school song. Lambert stood up and said, "I ain't singing no god damn song. Anyone want to try to make me sing one?" No one did, that tells you a little about how intimidating he could be. |
There are a lot of Steelers I could add to the list
France Harris - if for nothing else - the immaculate reception Terry Bradshaw Rocky Blier - big big heart Every Steeler linebacker from the 70's The Steel Curtain - Joe Greene, L.C Greenwood, Ernie Holmes (who am I forgetting?) In real life Lynn Swan was like what 5' 9' 160 pounds? Took the NFL beating and was an incredible WR How many have the Super Bowl juggling catch by Swan etched in their mind ? Few Raiders I could add too Dantheman already mentioned Stabler Jack Tatum - the guy could hit Lester Hayes - just for the stick 'em alone |
Heh, Ken Stabler was an incredible QB and an incredible drinker. I used to go to Steeler games with a group of friends that had about 25 tickets behind the Steelers bench. These guys were party animals. (we used to start tailgating at 7 AM and the moonshine usually came out by 8 AM, yeah, the stuff that will take the paint off your car....) I forget what year it was but the Raiders came to town for a playoff game and my friends went out and found Stabler at the hotel bar. They spent Saturday night buying him shots of JD. They said he was completely wasted when he staggered off to bed. A few hours later he went out and threw a bunch of TD passes and knocked the Steelers out of the playoffs.
Sorry, I just took a stroll down memory lane. :D |
1. Jack Lambert
2. Dick Butkus |
1. Peyton Manning
2. Barry Sanders 3. Johnny Unitas |
The Steel Curtain - Joe Greene, L.C Greenwood, Ernie Holmes (who am I forgetting?)
Dewhite White(sp) |
Fran Tarkenton - It was never over until it was over.....
Bob Griese Roger Staubach |
Johan Cruijf :P
|
I have to go with 2 of the Saints all time greats.
Archie Manning & Ricky Jackson |
My favorite current player is Hines Ward. Pound for pound the toughest receiver in the league. Catches 80-90 balls a year and still will plant a LB into the turf when he gets a chance. Fun player to watch.

Ask Merlin Olsen Another favorite player! |
MOSCA, ANGELO, Elected to the hall of fame as a Player, May 2, 1987. He played 15 CFL seasons, including nine times in the Grey Cup Game (emerging a winner five times). A CFL All-Star in 1963 and 1970, he was an Eastern All-Star Defensive Tackle five times.
"King Kong" Mosca went on to a wrestling career after football. I saw him wrestle a few times when I was a kid. http://www.canoe.ca/WrestlingImagesM/mosca_pose.jpg Last edited by Evil Chris at Feb 1 2004, 04:12 PM |

Ask Merlin Olsen Another favorite player![/b][/quote] Mean son of a bitch is not a bad thing in a lineman. Conrad Dobbler once denied ever biting people. He disclaimed responsibility for what happened to people who put their hands in his mouth. You give most of those guys the training routines that contemporary players practice, and they'd dominate the league today. Dobbler's an iffy proposition, because steroid dectection is so much beter. BTW ... least favorite has to be Don Merideth, although it was more for broadcast antics than football. In the early days of Monday Night Football St. Louis was scheduled to play his old team, and for several weeks Merideth was making snide remarks about it not being much of a matchup. The Cardinals proceded to blow out Dallas 38-0. Dandy Don was absolutely silent for the last ten minutes of the football game (and it was 7-8 years before St. Louis was on Monday Night Football again). Well ... that and those stuipid tea commercials. |
|
Walter Payton.
The best all around player ever and an incredible man as well |
The entire teams from the Cowboys and Steelers throughout the 70's
|
I forgot Kyle Turley
PD if I was a QB or RB I'd want Dobbler in front of me B) |
Chris Spielman on Defense
Barry Sanders or Walter Payton on offense. |
