Make sure you guys tape it!! :okthumb:

What's with the hip hop every year ? Have you heard the band Jet ? Great throw back to the 70s. :) |

Have you heard the band Jet ? Great throw back to the 70s. :)[/b][/quote] It's easy enough to tell why the PB has hip hop every year - those are the people that Darren actually knows and they're easy to book. I'm not really sure why everyone else does it though. I guess they're trying to create more of a party atomosphere by playing "current" music, but they're completely ignoring the main money-making segment of the industry (the 30+ crowd) when they do so. Their parties end up attracting the barely 20-something folks who come just for the tits and beer. I mean I like hip hop and rap, but the *real* stuff, not today's bullshit like Eminem. Kool Moe Dee, LL Cool J, 2Pac *peace sign* etc... you won't find these parties playing that old-school stuff. And I *love* techno, but it's useless to sit and listen to it with people around tables trying to get business done. Techno is for clubs with bass that will rattle your bones and lights pulsing to the music, and a huge dance floor to get lost on. I'm surprised by the number of parties that go on in restaurants (like Satines down in Florida) with techno music blasting you out. It's silly. Some old 80's hair bands would be killer, I'm sure Motley Crue would have no problem playing for pornographers LOL although getting Vince to play with the band would be like pulling teeth nowadays (and vice-versa). Then again could you pull together a big enough crowd to justify the cost? Probably not. |

Elvis Manson did well and everyone had a good time with them in Toronto. I understand Darren books rap acts because that's what he likes and has the connections for. I actually have connections for Motley Crue and some of the 80's hairbands (I used to book festival shows with 80's castoffs, one-hit wonders, hasbeens and never-wases as well as a couple hitmakers: Love/Hate, Gene Loves Jezebel, Tears For Fears (we booked a show one time and they just showed up and wanted to play), Giuffra, and countless others... I think there would be a nice turnout for such a show but no one has bothered to do one. Remember, this industry is built on most people being followers. Everyone else books rap/hiphop and techno clubs/acts because the other guys are doing it. I'm approaching mid-30's now as are a lot of others who grew up on the hairbands, early thrash metal, etc. just as the upcoming generation was raisied on rap and hiphop (and Vanilla Ice...yikes) I'll be announcing a new position I've taken at InterNext and maybe these folks would be up for such an event at future shows.... |

In fact when I heard Jet's new song the first time, I thought it was a Kinks song I'd never heard before. |

I guess they have to keep the kids that promote their programs happy. LOL |
its not just the over 30's who hate rap!!!
its odd nobody has ever thrown a more grungy, rock, heavy kinda party ... do it sykk!!!! |

Also in regards to "I guess they have to keep the kids that promote their programs happy" - could it be that more money is made with/from/by those who aren't kids and don't care for hip hop and rap? |

best of luck - aeon |
Darren is a cool cat, but this year's headliner is Naughty by Nature? Didn't they have their last hit about 10 years ago? Hardly a big name band. Granted the sponsor money isn't there like is has been in years past, but maybe that is an indicator that he needs to change the flavor of the show. I remember him mentioning bands like Foo Fighters, Linkin Park, Aerosmith. The majority of people would most likely welcome a band like that and would put their money behind it. Those bands are pretty expensive, but ANYTHING besides rap/hip-hop would be damn nice (just no Barry Manilow!). The rap is played out.
If Darren doesn't try something different, hopefully someone else will. I'll be skipping the Players Ball this year. |

Smart move - Colin's everything you claim you admire. :P |

Smart move? As if a meeting between me and Colin would degenerate into violence. I am almost starting to admire you as well. The solace that must accompany being utterly clueless has to be incredibly comforting. Like a big down comforter of simplicity. Ignorance is indeed bliss...and for that I do admire you hill people to a certain extent. Did Santa bring you a new banjo for xmas? |

-------------------serge-------------------- amsterdam jails are nice...they have internet connection! ;-))))) |
Player's Ball = Pimp and Ho = want to be a pimp = most pimps are, well, "african american" = music to suit the idea = rap
Either way, too loud ANYTHING is no condusive to doing business or talking to people, and that sort of makes it hard to get things done. I enjoyed the Flynt / Hustler thing last year with the 70's 80's throwback band, that was a bunch more fun that listening to someone rapping (barely) about shootin' dem cop and fuckin' dem hos and doin' dem drugs... Not that I don't think the Players balls are a good idea, the early ones (like Miami) had the right vibe... now I am not so sure. We'll see, I guess. Sykk, GWAR would be fun - especially if they have the super high pressure spayers to make sure they get all the people hiding in the corners of the room! Alex |
I would cry if the Foo Fighters played a porn convention.

You should have eaten the mushrooms that night. Be glad you were not around for New Years eve when the seriously fucked up mushrooms made an appearance. I still have two boxes of them in my fridge just daring me to eat them. Last edited by [Labret] at Jan 3 2004, 06:39 AM |
