Over-Spending at Restaurant: a Classical Problem?

LONDON (Reuters) - If the next time you are in a restaurant you suddenly feel an inexplicable urge to shell out for a beguiling Bordeaux, it may just be the Beethoven talking.

A British scientific study shows that a bit of classical music can persuade diners to buy more fancy coffees, pricey wines and luxurious desserts.

Researchers at Britain's universities of Leicester and Surrey persuaded a restaurant to alternate silence, pop music and classical on successive nights over 18 days, Sunday's Observer newspaper reported.

On nights when the classics were playing -- a tape of Beethoven, Mahler and Vivaldi -- patrons spent more on dinner, especially on "luxuries" such as coffee, dessert, fine wines and starters.

I know it works on me at Barnes & Noble! lol My spending there is getting out of control! They hype me up on Starbucks when I walk in the door and then pump that evil classical devil music in throughout the store... next thing I know I have an armful of books to buy and I can't wait to get home and start reading!!!

I think they should be STOPPED! <_<

Interesting little experiment. Who has a restaurant to try this out at?

I'm trying to get Gonzo, Hellpuppy and Wig to open one up here, but I suspect "Dueling Banjos" would get the diner more into the mood than classical music would. :okthumb:

Faster cars, younger women, older whiskey...more money.
My guess is there would be a lot of red meat on the menu, a copious selection of booze and no damn classical music....

So much heavy metal thunder the walls would bleed.

There ya go!

We'll have a churrascaria, and we'll have an entry way from the kitchen with lights and pyro and each goucho can come out to entrance music like wrestlers or the NBA.... Get everyone stoked for the next hunk of redmeat to make its rounds!
