Here are some pics from our weekend dipnetting for salmon at the mouth of the Kenai river. We all caught our limit of 25 salmon, about 150 fish total! They are mostly Kenai river reds and a few kings. KC was the MASTER and he wont even eat fish :) He even caught 3 at once! I think his .99 cent polarized clip on sunglasses are the secret.

I know, I know.. I'm working on it!!

Dipnetting was crazy... Scope that huge net into the river... pull out a 10 pound salmon!

it was wild :)

MissEve 07-16-2003 05:28 AM

Timon,

He is nuts! Ive been grilling salmon and he gets grilled pork or chicken, sheesh :) My mom bought a smoker today so I guess we have a weekend project. I usually give fish to someone else to smoke so it will be an experiment.

KC 07-16-2003 05:30 AM

FYI -

My polarized clip-ons were $6.99 and they're almost as cool as the high roller glasses MikeAI bought for my birthday present!!

Timon 07-16-2003 05:38 AM

Man I wish I was there, I LOVE fresh salmon!!

Yep,

My current ratio of LDL (bad) Cholesterol to HDL (good) Cholesterol is out of whack.. not enough fish and too much red meat. Which puts me at a higher risk of a lot of other problems...

So, whether or not I like it or not, fish is in my future! I guess it's just going to be an aquired taste for me ;)

KC,
do me a favor...
see "Natural Food" store owner and ask him about "red rice yeast"

it's a natural shit used in India for ages and lowers cholesterol 30% in just 4 weeks
(I tested it on myself)

KC, if you get a dark red tuna belly steak and grill or broil it properly it's nearly indistinguishable from beef, it's probably the best first step if you can't stand that "fishy" taste.

Find a good 5 star Italian restaurant that serves it :-)

KC 07-16-2003 06:40 AM

I'll ask my doc about it.. ;) Thanks for the tip!

I'll try that!

Yeah, It's the "fishy" taste that bothers me...

I had a bite of some of the fresh red salmon we caught the other day, it tasted pretty good and didn't have any "fishy" taste at all.

I'll stop being a puss and just start eating it. lol

also...ask your doctor about another cholesterol drug
(I forgot the name)

the difference between this one and "lipitor clones" is that
lipitor reduces amount of cholesterol produced in the liver,
while
the other one prevents cholesterol from going into the blood stream,
my father is taking it

I don't like fishy taste either but I eat fish all the time.

Tuna is the answer! Smoked salmon too, swordfish and snowfish are delicious as well...

Stay away from snapper...

And people give me a hard time for shooting a deer ties to a tree!

What you do not see in the pics is KC using car batteries to shock the fish as well!

Mike AI 07-16-2003 12:01 PM

Miss Eve, KC can you explain what the whole netting of slamon is? Is it that easy to catch fish in Alaska you jusrt have to dip a net in the water?

Billy 07-16-2003 12:27 PM

It looks really hard to fish like that :)

But the Salmon looks good : )

BradShaw 07-16-2003 12:32 PM

I can see KC fishing for a marlin with a big net next!

MissEve 07-16-2003 03:14 PM

Mike,

Dipnetting is open for approx. 2 weeks a year in two places, both rivers. Those salmon are going upstream to spawn and they will just die afterwards so I guess they figure out how many salmon are needed to make it upstream to spawn to repopulate. They have fish counters to figure that out. Sometimes dipnetting will be closed if there arent enough figh making it upstream, same thing with commercial fishing. There have been times when dipnetting is only open for subsistence fishermen (Eskimos, Indians) . Dipnetting is actually only open to Alaska residents.

JR! Dont you have ANY good memories of AK? :( Dont you ever miss the fish guts? the sweaty ass chest waders? lol Seriously, I still think AK in the summer is one of the most beautiful places in the world! We've had record breaking heat waves this summer.

Mike AI 07-16-2003 06:20 PM

Miss Eve, that is amazing!!!

Looks like fun.....

Maybe I'd be able to get the damn fish in the boat if I used a dipnet!

It was fun.. It took a while to get the hang of it..

It's a lot of work wading through the river like that with a huge net... and then when a fish hits it, it feels like it weighs a couple hundred pounds.

Every muscle in my body hurt for the next two days!

MikeW 07-16-2003 07:48 PM

I just had a *frozen* salmon steak for dinner ...... AND IT SUCKED! Please send any extra freshies you might have to me!!! :agrin: :yowsa:

i think Alaska is nice. its a matter of perspective i guess and a question of what you are comparing it too and what makes you happy. for people that really like the outdoors, boating, fishing, winters etc... Alaska is great. For people hiding from the feds, who want to grow pot in the middle of nowhere or who just plain hate people, its good too. :)

i never really got into sports fishing that much. i did when i was little. not in the Kenai river because of all the tourists but at different places around my house and other places on the peninsula.

I think that Alaska is really nice to visit. Summer is very nice. Winter was really enjoyable when i lived at Alyeska, had snowmachines and played all the time.

i think that in the end, i am not really an outdoors type of person. i tried. i have shot almost every big game animal and caught every fish. i just dont like it. i even got rid of all my guns.

its a nice place i think. but its easy to remember the good points and forget about the bad... like short summer, very little sun, long, cold, dark winters etc.

i have not even been back there in quite a few years (except to fly to Dutch Harbor). growing up in a small town of 5000 people, living at the end of the road, in the middle of no where in "the last frontier" always left me with one goal... getting out asap. i think maybe i got off to bad wrong start. :)

MissEve 07-17-2003 03:23 AM

JR, I hear you! Kenai would be a very strange place to grow up in. Anchorage is a small city in some respects but at least you can go to more than one movie theater and go to a decent restaurant. KC and I decided we couldnt deal with another night in the motorhome so we stayed at the Kenai Merit Inn, possibly the shittiest hotel Ive ever stayed in!

I've never been hunting and I don't think I could do it. Its not logical but for some reason killing fish and killing moose are two very different things to me. I just came back to AK for the summer after living in the Bay Area and its interesting to compare the two. I LOVE being able to drive across town in ten minutes! I miss a lot of shopping, restaurants, concerts etc.

This is very cheesy but every time I fly home to AK from Seattle and I leave on a night flight, Im very moved when I start to see the mountain ranges and the sky getting lighter even at midnight! :)
